The growing harmony between fiscal and monetary policies in recent years, to be specific since 2019, has been interwoven in the well-researched piece by Mridul Saggar. We are into an era when Monetary Policy will have no independent relevance as its dependence on fiscal policy support is growing. Post-pandemic, there were times when the central bank really worried about the inflation target prescriptions. At this stage, one expects the Centre to come forward with at least expression of intentions to manage resources outside the budget like domestic gold stock productively which can change the nation's image in the eyes of global rating agencies. While the White Paper on the progress of Indian Economy during the decade of NDA regime relied on facts and figures, the UPA Black Paper is more of a political presentation, perhaps addressing the people outside the house. Unfortunately, our "Opposition" in legislative houses since independence, irrespective of political denominations have taken on themselves the responsibility of "blindly opposing" the government of the day. With growing numerical strength on the opposition benches, we expect a responsible and participative role for opposition, as the responsibility for governance keeps shifting between different permutations and combinations of political parties. In the present case, if the intention of the opposition was to counter the data used by the government, those who put together the "Black Paper" could have relied on the RBI Website and come out with a fact-based presentation.
