Philosophers : 3 Dr S Radhakrishnan

Philosophers : 3 Dr S Radhakrishnan In the previous two messages covering philosophers, we discussed J Krishnamurthy and Bertrand Russell. Today we are trying to introduce Dr Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan* : https://iep.utm.edu/radhakri/ As an academic, philosopher, and statesman, Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan (1888-1975) was one of the most recognized and influential Indian thinkers in academic circles in the 20th century. Throughout his life and extensive writing career, Radhakrishnan sought to define, defend, and promulgate his religion, a religion he variously identified as Hinduism, Vedanta, and the religion of the Spirit. He sought to demonstrate that his Hinduism was both philosophically coherent and ethically viable. Radhakrishnan’s concern for experience and his extensive knowledge of the Western philosophical and literary traditions has earned him the reputation of being a bridge-builder between India and the West. He often appears to feel at home in the Indian as well as the Wester...

Kazhakam Days

Kazhakam Days Our family (Manakkal in Onchiyam Village) was one of the two families entrusted with Kazhakam duties in Vellikulangara Mahadeva Temple : https://g.co/kgs/Qr9pgvG There was also a Nambissan family sharing the Kazhakam responsibilities in the temple. The Puja responsibilities were with my father's Illam(Kannamkulam Illam, near Payyanur) and one of the members from that family used to stay in a house close to the temple. The third responsibility related to "Vadyam" during Puja and Seeveli (auspicious Pradakshinams after every major Puja during the first half of the day and in the night before closing, with the temple priest performing routine rituals and Marar and Warrier/Nambissan accompanying with Chenda Vadyam and Kuthuvilakku respectively) which was with a Marar family. Kazhakam duties included providing flowers 🌸 and garlands for the Deities in the temple, cleaning premises inside the temple, cleaning Puja and Naivedyam vessels and brass lamps, as also l...

Philosophers : 2) Bertrand Russell

Philosophers : 2) Bertrand Russell Starting this series, we remembered Jiddu Krishnamurti. Today let's go to Bertrand Russell M G Warrier Philosophers : 2 Bertrand Russell Introductory Bertrand Arthur William Russell (1872–1970) was a British philosopher, logician, essayist and social critic best known for his work in mathematical logic and analytic philosophy. His most influential contributions include his championing of logicism (the view that mathematics is in some important sense reducible to logic), his refining of Gottlob Frege’s predicate calculus (which still forms the basis of most contemporary systems of logic), his theories of definite descriptions, logical atomism and logical types, and his theory of neutral (the view that the world consists of just one type of substance which is neither exclusively mental nor exclusively physical). Russell's philosophy : Write-up shared by Vathsala Jayaraman, Chennai While talking about Bertrand Russel, his views ab...

Philosophers : 1) Jiddu Krishnamurti

Good Morning Collage has a holiday for rest of January 2025. Random messages from me will continue. Regards M G Warrier Philosophy Philosophy is the study of fundamental ideas and issues, such as existence, knowledge, and value. It's a rational and critical inquiry that seeks to understand the world and our place in it. What does philosophy study? Existence: What exists in the world, and what it's like. Knowledge: What we can know about the world, and how we can know it. Reason: How we think and make sense of the world Value: What's good, bad, right, and wrong Mind: How the mind relates to the body. Language: How we use language to communicate. Philosophers 1 J Krishnamurti Jiddu Krishnamurti's philosophy centered on self-awareness, living in the present, and questioning everything. He believed that people could only change the world by changing themselves. Key ideas Truth is a pathless land. Krishnamurti believed that truth is not something that can be attained ...

An interesting year is before us, and this weekend is going to be particularly awesome. For the media and analysts, the Economic Survey on Friday and the Budget next day will give enough homework. M G Warrier A Before more serious subjects engage our minds, let's discuss poetry : Ever wondered, how a poem is born? Let's get available help. Here's Ashok Subramanian explaining the birth of his first poem in 2013 : https://author-ashok.medium.com/poem-review-birth-of-a-poem-7bacd695ed9b Excerpts : I remember the first poem I wrote. The year was 2011. Those were the days when updating one’s status on Facebook was a fad. I wasn’t an exception. It was morning 7'O clock. My parents and brother visited me in Mumbai. I had met them and then gone to the office, hitchhiking a ride in my colleague’s car. I was...

Nice Day M G Warrier A Today we are discussing "Decluttering The Mind". Like the advertiser says "It may not be possible in one day. But one day you will wonder "I've done it!" Declutter My Mind : Read somewhere, last year Deepavali - this festival of lights, Dedicate, I should, to change my mind sets, Declutter my head of the garbage bags, Diagnose my mind of its symptoms, Drive out all ghosts and goblins, Dust off all prejudices that still persists, Demolish the demon of anger and jealousies, Destroy the giant ego that stubbornly dwells. Deepavali is a time to develop the mind - A Determination to search for the light of divine knowledge. Deal only with the heart that flows like a river of love Dwell only with compassion falling like a waterfall. Sonnet Dr Geeta Radhakrishna Menon Extra Reading htt...

Books published by M G Warrier

My adventures with writing and publishing First time I saw my name in print was when a Malayalam translation of a short Hindi story was published in Mathrubhumi Weekly when I was 12 or 13 years old. My responses were being published in the media since 2003. That was the year I retired from service a little early and my responses in financial newspapers became more frequent. Former DG, SS Tarapore persuaded me to publish my first book putting together all published articles. Actually he wrote the foreword for my first book, Banking, Reforms & Corruption (2014, Sampark, Kolkata. Now available in eBook format as "Chasing Inclusive Growth" Notion Press, Chennai) : https://amzn.in/d/4kquFhk The following 10 years, I published three more books with the help of Notion Press and some more using the free publishing facilities of Kindle Direct Publishing. Welcome To Warrier's COLLAGE On Sunday, January 12, 2025 Good Morning Happy Birthday to all readers having Birthday this week. Nice Day M G Warrier A Amazon Book Review Tuesdays with Morrie : Reviewed by M G Warrier https://www.amazon.in/gp/aw/review/0751527378/R1N0G444AG55FN?ref_=cm_sw_r_mwn_dprv_QYDBWBGAT9QX6VKY145P&language=en-IN Excerpts : M G Warrier I crossed 80 last year. I'm a slow reader. I haven't reached reading page 150 of a 200 plus pages book in one week and "Tuesdays with Morrie" helped me post this record and I am celebrating the occasion. Again, usually I read last pages first, even while reading suspense thrillers. As my friend who recommended this Mitch Albom book had given me some idea about this book, I opted to read from page 1 to the last page without scanning pages in between. When I reached half way, I was getting uncomfortable about the story coming to an end. I started reading slower and slower. Why? To know that...

Someone older, patient and wise, who understood you when you were young and searching, and gave you sound advice to help you make your way through it. For Mitch Albom, that person was Morrie Schwartz, his college professor from nearly twenty years ag...

Live in the present

Live in the present "Live in the present" is a profound advice. But present doesn't exist without past and future. I may be wrong. Omar Khayyam said "Dead Yesterday, Unborn Tomorrow..." Everyone may be right, in the context the statement is made. We dissect and mutilate observations out of context. Let's focus on the present. M G Warrier
