Total absence of HR planning can be harmful

http://www.business-standard.com/article/economy-policy/robots-coming-for-jobs-of-as-many-as-800-mn-worldwide-117113000037_1.html Total absence of resources planning : While deployment of machines for getting work done more efficiently and faster and use of robots for risky, dirty or hazardous jobs has to be welcomed, keeping workforce under perennial threat of skills becoming obsolete every decade or making labour cheaper by threatening job elimination can have perilous social security consequences. During the last ten years, we have seen the exploitation of common man and consumers as a class being converted into political propaganda ideas by shrewd politicians and business propositions by intelligent politicians and businessmen. I look at India Against Corruption(IAC) and the emergence of Air Deccan and Tata Nano from this angle and am convinced about the positive impact these had on the political scene and a radical change in manufacturers’ and consumers’ approach to costs and prices. WEEKEND LIGHTER: BEYOND EXTERNAL RATINGS

WEEKEND LIGHTER: BEYOND EXTERNAL RATINGS (November 25/26, 2017) Cover Story Beyond External Ratings This refers to your editorial “Rating the raters” (Business Standard, Weekend Ruminations, November 18). T N Ninan has done a brief, but an excellent summing up and analysis of the challenges external rating agencies pose, encapsulating many fallacies in the rating exercise usually ignored by media and analysts while celebrating an upgrade or lamenting about an unusual downgrade. Enjoyed reading the comment on 'definition of corruption'. Strangely, what is ‘bribe’ in India is accounted legally as ‘promotional expenses’ or ‘discounts allowed’ in other countries and the corruption tag gets removed as the expenses become ‘legal'. This applies to several parameters applied by rating agencies which parrot the feelings of their masters. Just one more example: This paper also has accepted ‘Debt to GDP Ratio’ is high in India. True. But, we forget that in the

Editorial: Rating the raters : PThe US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) report on its 10-month investigation into the manner in which rating agencies assessed structured financial products, and their role in the sub-prime crisis, makes for interesting reading... Rating the raters Brief, but an excellent summing up and analysis. Enjoyed reading about the comment on 'definition of corruption'. This applies to all parameters applied by rating agencies which parrot the feelings of their masters. Just one example: In Moody's land (United States), Government Debt to GDP Ratio was 106.10 in 2016. You thought, no comparison, where's India and where's US a 'developed' country! The percentage averaged 61.14 from 1940 to 2016 (118.90 in 1946 and 31.70 in 1981). US had a GDP figure @ US $18.57 trillion in 2016 which may cross $19 trillion next year. Ever wondered why US government should have a Public Debt figure at all? And where all

Indecent exit: Kerala Minister's resignation

http://www.thehindu.com/opinion/editorial/the-last-resort/article20461117.ece Letters November 16, 2017 Indecent exit The Hindu editorial “The last resort” (November 16) has captured the entire content of the drama enacted by politicians and the media in Thiruvananthapuram this week ending with the indecent exit of Minister Thomas Chandy the resort owner. We, the people are paying dearly for having left governance totally to the whims of politicians. In politics, professionalism is conspicuous by its absence. And the resultant rot is spreading  like cancer. You have hit the nail by concluding that the real ‘test for him (Pinarayi Vijayan ) will be to ensure that governance does not suffer amid his deft political manoeuvres.’ The test equally applies to leaderships of all political parties in India irrespective of denomination and size. At this stage, Pinarayi Vijayan should break his silence and use his natural leadership qualities to put the Left Democratic Front back on

WEEKEND LIGHTER: JUSTICE DENIED IN RESERVE BANK OF INDIA

WEEKEND LIGHTER: Justice denied in RBI (November 4/5, 2017) Feel free to mail your views on this edition of WL to   mgwarrier@gmail.com Section III A “rejected” review I Cover Story Justice denied in Reserve Bank of India This refers to Anup Roy’s report “RBI employees stage protests on pension issue” (Business Standard, November 3). RBI employees/retirees have been holding public protests demanding pension revision for the last twelve years. Pension scheme (on the same lines as central government pension scheme) in lieu of Contributory Provident Fund(CPF) was introduced in RBI effective January 1, 1986. The RBI Pension Regulations contained built-in provisions for periodic revisions in pension whenever wage revision was effected for serving employees. This was reiterated by the Bank in a circular dated March 13, 1992 when employees hesitated to opt for pension surrendering their accumulations in CPF. RBI revised pension thrice, effective November 1,
