SBI Conclave 2022 : Credit Deposit Ratio

November 24, 2022 Credit-deposit ratio This refers to the report "Govt spending, excess SLR to support loan growth : SBI chief" (The Hindu Business Line, November 24). India is one of the first developing countries to recognise the potential of the banking system in playing a proactive role in nation building. SBI chief's optimistic revelations about the functioning of the banking system post-pandemic are soothing and comforting. By involving state machinery and non-government organisations in credit planning at every level from State to villages since early 1960's, ensuring adequate credit flow to priority sectors and monitoring Credit-deposit ratios India ensured an even spread of economic growth across geographies. It is unfortunate that, of late, this aspect of the role played by banks in India's economic growth doesn't get the attention it deserves. The signal in the SBI chief's observations that banks can stand where they are even with laggi

Astrology & Astronomy : Two Views

Astrology & Astronomy : And Destiny Varying Views 1) C V Subbaraman Whatever happens IS THE DESTINY. Sahadeva is considered as a great astrologer. He was approached by Duryodhana to tell on what day Duryodhana should start the war so that he would win. Sahadeva could not be prevented by Krishna from telling the truth; on learning that if Duryodhana started war on an Amavasya day, he would win, he proclaimed in advance that the war would be started on New Moon Day. But Krishna announced that Amaavaasya fell on the previous day to the actual amaavaasya day. There arose a dispute. Krishna called all the Devaas. Among them were Surya and Chandra. Krishna asked the congregation, "what is Amaavaasya" day? The day on which Sun and Moon will be together: rise and fall together. He then pointed out that in the sadass, both these were there. Others could not dispute this. So it was said that the war was started one day in advance of Amaavaasya in reality and so Duryodhana coul

Return on investment

November 18, 2022 Return on investment This refers to the report "At Rs18,719 cr, Centre's PSU dividend receipts close to 50% of FY23 target" (The Hindu Business Line, November 18). While some estimates and projections about dividend receipts from PSUs can't be avoided as part of budget exercises, tracking targets and comparisons in such exercises puts pressures on individual institutions. Gradually government is taking note of this and the awareness gets reflected in conservative estimates resulting in overshooting of targets in recent years. Expecting reasonable return on investment and ploughing back surplus income on a need-based basis are part of prudent resources management. Simultaneously, government need to tap the possibility of mapping resources and making industries reinvest an agreed portion of surplus income back, irrespective of whether the units are in the public or private sector. Corporates in the private sector which availed several concessi

Check List Manifesto

Collage Books The Checklist Manifesto : How to Get Things Right A New York Times BestsellerIn this bestseller, Atul Gawande shows what the simple idea of the checklist reveals about the complexity of our lives and how we can deal with it.The modern world has given us stupendous know-how. Yet avoidable failures continue to plague us in health care, government, the law, the financial industry―in almost every realm of organized activity. And the reason is simple: the volume and complexity of knowledge today has exceeded our ability as individuals to properly deliver it to people―consistently, correctly, safely. We train longer, specialize more, use ever-advancing technologies, and still we fail. Atul Gawande makes a compelling argument that we can do better, using the simplest of methods: the checklist. In riveting stories, he reveals what checklists can do, what they can't, and how they could bring about striking improvements in a variety of fields, from

At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, finds utterance. It is fitting that at this solemn moment we t
