Unified Pension Scheme (UPS)

Media Response The Hindu Business Line* Letters August 27, 2024 Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) This refers to your editorial "Sound compromise" (August 27). Centre deserves appreciation and congratulations for the timely rectification of an injustice meted out to a section of goverment employees who joined service after 2003. Timely, because all those who joined service after 2003 are still in service. One of the reasons for the hasty introduction of NPS was government's unpreparedness to initiate funding of the Old Pension System(OPS) which was being implemented on a "Pay As You Go" basis. In the process of implementation of NPS and under the new Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) this defect also has been thankfully rectified. Your worry about the extra burden on taxpayer is misplaced as any employer will be aware of the impact on C to C with every change in wage components and government will know how to adjust the overall wage bill consistent with ma...

Let's just argue : Narayani Ganesh

Let's just argue https://m.economictimes.com/opinion/speaking-tree/lets-just-argue/articleshow/112719495.cms This is an interesting thought. The message is, there can be a different view. Many of us have rigid views on certain issues. Easiest examples are God and Politics. I'm sure, you are not going to agree with me, if I say "The atheist you are talking about may be a believer". That's because you have a rigid concept about God. Like one of the Ravi Varma paintings or the person nailed on a cross or whatever. Even in official meetings, my way of handling heated arguments was by allowing both sides to express their views and if there was no meeting point, go by the majority view, if it's consistent with natural justice and law of the land.

All goals are not set based on math. If you disagree, stop reading this and go to the next page. Targets and goals give us a reason to work harder or involve ourselves with more enthusiasm in our endeavours. 2047 is 22 years and some months away. The only reason we are talking about that year today is, something happened in 1947. Philosophy, Music and Mathematics go together. Economics is not there in the Trio. Back to the basic issue of where India will be in 2047. India will be much advanced by then, than today....

M G Warrier RBI watchers will agree that the central bank has come a long way from the days of "walking alone" laments from the Finance Minister and occasional spars between spokespersons of Finance Ministry and RBI about who's right and who's wrong. This doesn't mean that the fiscal and monetary policies are now in total harmony. So long as multiple pulls and pressures continue to haunt policy makers, dilemmas and 'trilemmas' will be often used to describe thought processes of policy makers. Still, overall perception about the Monetary Policy Committee(MPC) since inception has been that the policy making body, because of the professionalism weaved into its fabric, is a mature body and each of...

RBI Listens

The Economic Times Chat Room August 5, 2024 RBI listens This refers to the article "Keep Ear Close to the Ground, RBI" (Economic Times, August 5). RBI watchers will agree that the central bank has come a long way from the days of "walking alone" laments from FM and occasional spars about who's right and who's wrong. This doesn't mean that the fiscal and monetary policies are now in total harmony. So long as multiple pulls and pressures continue to haunt policy makers, dilemmas and 'trilemmas' will be often used to describe thoughts of policy makers. Still, overall perception about MPC is that the policy making body because of the professionalism weaved in in its fabric, has become mature and each member is able to contribute to the three day deliberations in such a way that the end product on the third day is a near consensus view. Thus the fear of a division and casting vote has only a remote chance of happening. M G WARRIER M...

Warrier's Collage on Sunday August 4, 2024

Welcome To Warrier's COLLAGE On Sunday August 4, 2024 🙏 M G Warrier A Collage Snippets Fear Most of us live in fear. Some of us camouflage our fear in different ways. As a child I was afraid of my parents, teachers and some of my elders and neighbours. I was told if I was godfearing I need not be afraid of all others. I couldn't understand or put into practice this due to various circumstances. Slowly I came to know that those who are stronger didn't fear the weak. If you have the support of a stronger person, your fear of a third person who is weaker than the person supporting you gets reduced. I started adopting various strategies to feel stronger and more courageous. The strategies included improvise my own health, nurturing friendship with stronger people, being part of "dare devil" groups which later on graduated into joining strong organisations. Some of these strategies were expensive in the long term. Like, being active in trade unions ...
