Warrier's Collage on Thursday March 27, 2025

Welcome To Warrier's COLLAGE On Thursday, March 27, 2025 Friends As a child, I have watched my grandmother going to a page at random in her prized possession of "Bhagavatam" and reading two lines from the top of the left hand side page that opens, before going to the page where she has kept the marker. Today, before I took up my usual routine reading, I remembered her and opened the pocket edition of Bhagavad Gita and believe me, the right hand page I got was the beginning of Chapter 10 (VibhootiYogah). For the first time, I read the Chapter which has 42 Stanzas, in one sitting. No big deal, you may think. But, I have been always getting more and more impressed by the Jagad Guru's qualities as a teacher. For his Mom, he just opened his mouth to show the Universe, he made his devotee in Guruvayoor (Melpathur) recite "Agre Pashyami..." once he was able to feel His presence and the less intelligent Warrior and Comrade who happened to be related to him, yes, Arjuna, He had to spend more time and energy to make him understand the trust-worthiness of the person who will help him win the war. For Krishna, having to present his CV in just 42 stanzas here was an onerous task. If still in doubt, ask Arjuna or read Gita! B Select Response C V Subbaraman Happiness I wonder if it is possible or necessary at all to "conquer" happiness. And why conquer happiness and not unhappiness? Both remain effectively the same situation. When one conquers happiness he or she at the same time conquers unhappiness too. Happiness is the state of mind for the time being - a short period at that and the moving mind moves on to be unhappy about other various things. It is simply a futile thing to consciously chase a state of mind that is neither happy nor unhappy. Being happy and unhappy are emotional traits which cannot be avoided at any cost. Even the plants and flowers and trees and all other animals and birds show their happiness or unhappiness at one time or the other. Can Man be different, despite his arrogance that he is blessed with a brain and the thinking power? We carry on with our day to day affairs, meeting situations as they arise, "successfully or unsuccessfully" and move on. This has been going on for thousands of days, months, years and eons. We shall continue to be so in future. Some stray articles on how to be happy and how to conquer happiness may do good to the writer and to the publisher and that too for a short period. Subbaraman C Where books are worshipped The Hindu Sunday Magazine article, "Where a book is worshipped" (Open Page, March 23) deserves to be read repeatedly and shared with others. The concept of "Mathatheetha Devalayam" is by now popular in some places. But not yet, the idea of a library and writers' workshops around the deity which itself is a book! Offering to the temple and prasadam in books are unique practices going well with the writings on the concrete idol : "God is knowledge. Religion is broad thinking. Humble wisdom is the path" The man behind the whole endeavour has, for obvious reasons, decided to handle the institutionalisation of his childhood dream as a private enterprise shared with his near and dear ones. Wish him success. I can relate my memories with this "Temple of Books" from a different angle. During our school days(1950's), me and my sister were staying inside a temple where our father was the Pujari. He hailed from Payyanur, a village close to the location of the Mathatheetha Devalayam now located. During our stay in the temple we worshiped our books more than any Deity around. M G Warrier D Media Response Attention Caregivers of ailing UCBs/NBFCs March 26, 2025 Cooperatives deserve more attention* This refers to the article "UCBs need to scale up" (Hindu Business Line, March 26). Issues relating to governance and supervisory oversight highlighted in the article are all very relevant in respect of banks and NBFCs dependent on public deposits for sustenance of their business model. Perhaps a review of the structure of these institutions and the sources of funds and their deployment is overdue. Multiple controls and the type of ownership/management also contribute to the weaknesses of these institutions. The recent collapse of some limbs of cooperatives in Kerala and closure of several UCBs should be an eye opener for central and state governments and institutions like RBI and NABARD. A total overhaul of the institutional system other than commercial banks is the need of the hour. M G Warrier Mumbai *An edited version was published today.
