Warrier's Friends' Collage, July, 2026

Warrier's Friends' Collage, July 2026 Good Morning Random Reading : Loneliness & Solitude A rainy Sunday morning in Mumbai cannot be conducive for writing about current affairs, philosophy or pure gossips. Neither for reading a book one loves. But the day doesn't dawn with a menu card, to chose from. Every next minute unfolds with its own agenda. This morning, I was reading some pages from "The Outsider" by Albert Camus (1913-1960). They related to a prisoner waiting execution being counselled by a messenger of God. We may not be able to fathom the thoughts of other individuals who are alone or love solitude. Remembered M T Vasudevan Nair's "Aalkoottathil Thaniye" (Alone in the crowd). Each one of us is alone at some stage in life. Not necessarily by choice. We, in many situations get a choice, though. Alexander Pope's classic work is titled "Ode on Solitude", a poem he wrote around the age of 12. It beautifully celebrates the...

World Outside : Italy

World Outside : Italy RITA, Milan - Via Angelo Fumagalli 1, Zone 6 - Restaurant Reviews & Phone Number - Tripadvisor https://share.google/CUuFkCbQv8PDGvMlv Good Morning Sometimes, we read a wrong article. Like entering a wrong shop. This article about "Rita, Milan", I stumbled upon like that. First I thought Rita and Milan are young and eligible friends or characters in a story. You don't need an AI-supported App to allow your thoughts to wander. After Narada (read gossips if you are uncomfortable with Mythology), thought travels fastest. The other day, one of my readers said, "Nothing else, Warrier can move on to Spirituality and Mythology for a diversion." He's right. But by daily exercise like this will scare away the "Nothing else" situation for some more time. After reading half the article only I got some idea about the subject. Frankly, I'm not familiar with the vocabulary here. But, after reading the full article, I find it inte...

Vishwaroopadarshanam

Vishwaroopadarshanam Bhagavad Gita, Chapter XI is titled "Vishwaroopadarshanam" (The Vision of the Universal Form). Arjuna was given 'Divya Chakshu' (Divine Eyes) and allowed to have a glance of Krishna's Vishwaroopam. Earlier, Krishna as a child had allowed a glimpse of his Universal Form by wide opening his mouth, to mother Yashoda when many alleged that he ate soil and she made him open his mouth to verify. God-realization through Practice of Renunciation The pocket edition of Bhagavad Gita brought out by Gita Press (Gorakhpur) has a 19 page writeup with this caption. The seven types of renunciation, possible even for the householder, listed therein are worth a look : 1 Total renunciation of prohibited acts. 2 Renunciation of acts performed for the satisfaction of worldly desires. 3 Total renunciation of worldly thirst. 4 Renunciation of the habit of extracting service from others with a selfish motive. 5 Total renunciation of influence and desire for fruit ...

Smile alone

Good Morning Smile alone During 1960's, I used to stay alone in a single-room in a fairly large hostel-type accomodation behind Thiruvananthapuram Secretariat. There were some 20 single rooms and around 60 double rooms in "Cooperative Home" Room No 3, Cooperative Home https://share.google/OaofAzl4P6lCPoh9M 20 to 30 residents were Reader's Digest subscribers. Some of them read the Digest cover to cover and the content became topic of discussion in post-dinner group meetings which sometimes crossed over to 00 00 hours. In some rooms there were accumulations of copies of RD safe in their wrappers. Some read only the jokes and "Life's Like That", smiled alone and kept the magazine on the table to show that they were "subscribers" Today, cover price of RD is Rs125/- When I started reading Digest, single copy price was less than Two Rupees. I may live for few more years to see the price going up to Two hundred Rupees. Nice Day M G Warrier

"Ón The Shortness Of Life" By Seneca

Good Morning Book on my table : "On The Shortness Of Life" By Seneca Last week while reading Seneca's book "Letters from a Stoic", I found a mention about this book in the introduction, with equal emphasis. Curious, I tried to know more and I was surprised to find that the book that has survived hundreds of years and covering a subject like "shortness of life" has only 56 pages and is priced just hundred rupees. Ordered a copy. Amazon description about the book reads : "De Brevitate Vitae (English: On the Shortness of Life) is a moral essay written by Seneca the Younger, a Roman Stoic philosopher, sometime around the year 49 AD, to Paulinus. Seneca's biting words still pack a powerful punch two thousand years later. According to the essay, nature gives people enough time to do what is really important and the individual must allot it properly. In general, time is best used by living in the present moment in pursuit of the intentional, purpos...

Managing stress

Managing stress The article "Stress Spaces You Out" (ET- Speaking Tree :Narayani Ganesh) concludes with this para : "Regular lifestyle practices that pre-empt any kind of stress include pranayam, meditation, chanting, walking and prayer. Self-affirmation can help auto-banish anxiety and stress." Pranayama is scientific/yogic management of breathing and is composed of 'breathing in', 'retaining breath' and 'breathing out'. There are different types of pranayama and to practice any of them, guidance of a teacher is necessary. Just as stress is the result of multiple physical and psychological reasons, managing stress also requires proper diagnosis of stress-triggers and following lifestyle changes, medication where necessary and exercise as advised by professionals in the respective areas. Stoicism : A brief introduction

Stoicism : A brief introduction Prayer https://youtu.be/YrO8qs5lOrA?si=mPCJRDp35mSjebDv There was a reference to Stoicism today in ET Speaking Tree(June 27, 2026) Stoicism My quick search to know more about Stoicism took me to a book "Letters from a Stoic" by Seneca : https://amzn.in/d/01Ul2uj3 Amazon description : What is the importance of friendship? How do we deal with challenges in life? And how do we look death in the eye and be not afraid? Letters from a Stoic is a compilation of carefully chosen letters that Seneca penned to Lucilius, letters which are personal essays that answer the questions stated above and many, many more. Translated from Latin into English by Richard M. Gummere, these are letters on a wide variety of topics, such as on having quiet conversations, on suicide, on the dynamic of a master-slave relationship, on grief, on god, and even on welcoming death. So, here is a book to give you a peek into a rich and complicated mind, a book that hol...

India growing!

India growing! An experience while traveling by train from Bhusawal to Goa today... "Suddenly, my friend's 2-year-old son developed a fever. We didn't have any medicines with us, and there were still 7 hours left before reaching our destination, Madgaon. We thought about getting off at the next station, consulting a doctor, and then continuing the journey by road. Casually, I told a vendor selling goods on the train : “We need some medicine. Can you arrange it at the next station? I'll give you ₹500 for your effort.” The vendor replied, “No need for that. Meet the TTE (Ticket Examiner); your problem will be solved.” We immediately met the TTE. In all my life, I had never experienced such promptness from a government employee. He stopped what he was doing, made a phone call right away, noted down our seat number and the medical condition, and asked us to return to our seats. Honestly, we didn't expect much. We had already decided that if necessary, we would g...

Battles & Wars

Battles & Wars I do not know whether the Mahabharata (Kurukshetra) War was really fought on the field. Or, may be, it was an epic symbolising the churning, measuring and the tsunamis that happen in the human mind. Let us not worry about the epic. We know wars and battles have all along been the pastime of greedy and powerful rich individuals and families. Once the Kings & Rajas were replaced by various types of governments, the legacy of fighting and defeating the neighbours was maintained in different forms. No, history is not my subject. Fast Forward to the present. Look at the resources being wasted for maintaining weapons including nuclear warheads, ships, aircraft and large armed forces. These resources along with hoarded assets across the world, if deployed productively, can make this planet poverty-free and improve the standard of living of 7 billion people on this planet multifold. All literate people are aware of this situation. Across centuries, many have raised thei...

Random Reading : I'm OK, You're OK

Random Reading : June 20, 2026 "I'm OK- you're OK" By Thomas A Harris Thomas Anthony Harris (April 18, 1910 – May 4, 1995) was an American psychiatrist and author who became famous for his self-help manual "I'm OK- You're OK" (1967). The book was a bestseller and its name became a cliche during the 1970s. I purchased a copy of this book during 1970's. Though later I had to read bulkier books on psychology, psychiatry and human behaviour as also about the motives of "Why people do what they do", this book has some content to guide the reader about every aspect of human behaviour. From the newborn child's first breath to the agonizing look of the Alzheimer's patient. If you don't have a copy, procure one before the print edition becomes extinct : https://amzn.in/d/09GPkREZ The 269 page book is a well-researched document and considering the age of the author when the book was first published (Thomas A Harris was in his 30...

Personal White Paper

Personal White Paper : M G Warrier(Born 1944) Inspired by the gossips about two White Papers on the state of economy and financial status of two states in India by two infant state governments, I thought of looking back at the progress of my own finances from 1944 to 2026. Panampilli Govinda Menon was central Minister of State forFood & Agriculture. He was addressing a large audience somewhere in Central Travancore, when a corruption case against him was talking of the town. Midway through his speech, a loud voice from someone sitting close to the stage was heard : "...ലക്ഷം മുക്കിയ മേനോനെ..." Panampilli paused, and shouted : (Free translation) "Yes. There's an allegation against me about a purchase/sale transaction of Andhra rice. Amount involved is 2.75 lakhs. Only one person in this audience has raised voice against that here. He may please come to the stage and receive his pro rata share of 1.75 Anna and keep quiet" Remembered this story while reading ...

Trust & Faith

This story tells us about the importance of mutual trust between a doctor and a patient despite the harsh environment. If the trust is lost, no doctor will take the risk to treat a rare disease (how severe it is). And without a faith on his physician, no patient will progress towards recovery. Healing begins when both patients and physicians develop this trust. Trust and faith.... 333 BCE. Alexander’s army was passing through Cicilia (Modern day Turkey). Alexander the Great decided to take a bath in the icy water of the river Cidnus (Now called ‘Berdan’). The following day he developed fever, and gradually it led to febrile convulsions. The royal physicians accompanying the king were very scared and reluctant to treat him as they knew the consequence of any glitch in the treatment could cost their life. A physician named Philip from Acarnania was bold enough and came forward to treat Alexander. He prepared a medicinal draught for the seriously ill king. When Alexander was about to dr...

Welcome To Warrier's Friends' COLLAGE, June 4, 2026 A Random Reading Responses Responses to Random Reading 2/2026(June 3, 2026) 1 Dr T V Gopalakrishnan ExRBI : "Unfortunately, all these words with indepth meaning remain in books, sometimes in speeches as quotes, and are seldom put into practice to enhance the quality of life. After some time, even this can vanish, and living will be guided by something else more connected with materialism, technology and evolving AI. Chaos and confusion are the present order and tough times are ahead for upcoming generations." My response : True 🙏 I'm sharing what I write for my satisfaction and as part of regular exercise. Despite his size, he occupied a lot of space in the hearts of all our family members besides his things spread everywhere inside our home. Adorable with his mischievous look, jumping out of joy when we come into our home as though he is seeing us after a long time, wagging his tail vigorously, and sometimes running from one end of the home to the other end at a lightening speed, he created such an impact in our hearts. Our routines changed to get back home within 3-4 hours whenever we go out to ensure we see him as quickly as possible. He loves all kinds of food and demands timely feeding and wanted all of us to spend more time with him regularly. He used to get one toy every 15 days as anything...

Self & The Universal Soul

Nietzsche and the reinvention of the human https://share.google/NkxyXOICmrevZU5Qj Self Development Guidance for self development is available everywhere. As a child, you were guided by parents. During education, teachers tried their best, in libraries, you stared at self-development books for a longer period of time and the newspapers and magazines gave you enough reading material. Religious discourses and scriptures are in addition to all these. Still, you have a lingering feeling that something is incomplete. Pursuit goes on. These thoughts came to mind when I was reading the quote from Sri Aurobindo starting with "I become what I see in myself..." To see something in oneself, one need to know the concept of self. Is it a whole, complete in itself, or is it, as some philosophers tell you, the tiniest imaginable part of a large 'Universal Soul'? I read somewhere today, the Stoics compared the new born soul to a sheet of paper ready for writing. Upon this the senses ...

These profound sutras, reserved for those deemed worthy of divine grace, unravel the mysteries of our true nature and the illusory existence we inhabit. Seventh Fear

Seventh fear One of the perquisites of longevity is getting to hear, see, read or tell things you have heard, seen, read or told already multiple times. You are destined to have similar experience when you pick up a second or third book by the same author. People who accumlate self development literature in their personal libraries will tell you agonizing experience about their monotony in reading same suggestions written by different authors. I have heard people complaining about repetition of the same stanzas in vedic texts like Upanishads and Bhagavad Gita. But there are many around who still want to be guided to a better life. Writings like this are for them. Last one was a long weekend mainly attributable to the Easter holidays. Welcome To Warrier's Friends' COLLAGE, April, 2026 Part I (April 5, 2026) Editorial Many of us are adversely affected by the side effects of the current man-made chaos initiated by a nation which boasts about a legacy of two hundred years old legacy of democracy. May be, it's a system in disrepair waiting overhaul. How to incorporate the quote in real life? To use Ratan Tata's words to shape one's life, the key is to change how you view challenges and setbacks. Instead of seeing difficulties as failures, try to see them as a natural part of growth. When something goes wrong, whether it's career setback, a personal problem, or a mistake, remind yourself that these “downs” are part of the process that helps you learn and improve. Practically, this means staying resilient during tough phases and not expecting life to always be smooth. Celebrate your highs but also accept the lows with patience and reflection. Warrier's Friends' Collage, March 27, 2026 : Assets Management

This refers to the report "LS Approves Finance Bill, Tax Rules Eased" (March 26). Common man is not amused to hear that "this Finance Bill has so much more for the middle class" or "the focus is on easing compliance and cutting litigation". In addition to his own struggles made more strenuous by the side effects of war elsewhere, he feels helpless with no light seen at the end of the tunnel. Unusual situations need off the cuff experiments to find medium term solutions for new problems cropping up every day. The setting up of Price Stabilization Fund is really a comfort. But the need of the hour is diversification of sources of revenue. This will call for immediate mapping of available investible assets and ploughing them into pools which will be available for accessing in times of need. Let's not forget the experience of 1991, when RBI Executives physically carried gold for pledging to borrow small amounts of forex. Like keeping vacant houses tena...

Concept Of God

Concept Of God A cocktail of God, Russell, Marriage & Morals make a wonderful intoxicant for a weekend. Today, I was feeling lazy in the morning and I had not attempted to complete writing my daily quota of 200 words. I read this message at the right time. Shri Raman Menon, then a Tutor (Mathematics)who was transferred from our college (Govt College, Madappalli) to nearby Brennen College, Tellicherry had come back to say bye to his friends. He was asked to address the students in the evening. He was a good orator. The one hour talk he devoted to telling the story of Macbeth and for introducing Bertrend Russell to the audience. He mentioned about Russell's book "Conquest Of Happiness" which I later borrowed from the Kerala University Library. That book helped me to get introduced to Russell and I read some more books authored by Bertrand Russell. I found all of them interesting. Coming back to the concept of God, my experience is that the concept which is planted as...

Warrier's Friends' Collage February 2026 : I

Welcome To Warrier's Friends' COLLAGE, February, 2026 Part I A Editorial Warrier's Friends' Collage As some of you may be aware, Warrier's Collage was a daily message from me to my contacts during the pandemic circa 2019-21. The target age group was 18 to 90's (Yes, we had 5 or 6 recipients who were waiting for Collage in the mornings, one of them, who was in US, delaying his dinner by half an hour to one hour on days Collage was late to arrive). My collection of information and sharing with others had a humble beginning during the late 1980's. After passing 12th from KC College, my son got admission in an Engineering College in interior Maharashtra where his stay was in the College Hostel. To keep in touch I started writing weekly letters which I called "My Page" and in addition to usual letter, I started writing something about current affairs, history or whatever came to my mind and sometimes annexed some relevant clippings from newspa...

Sampath Board Of Friendship

Sampath Board Of Friendship I loved reading the piece "Allegedly, The Board of Friendship is here" by G Sampath in today's (February 8, 2026) The Hindu Magazine. I loved and hated "Sampath" since childhood (1940's) and much later I started loving to read G Sampath, author of the article I'm reading now. A Google search just now informed me why I am in love with G Sampath : "G. Sampath is the author of How to Make Enemies and Offend People, and the editor of The Pleasure Principle, an anthology of erotic stories. He lives in Delhi. Explore a thoughtfully curated collection of books that invite reflection, spark curiosity, and offer something meaningful for every kind of reader." Fair enough. Always consult Google when you are i doubt about what you thought. Jokes aside, G Sampath has done some serious research to improve the fate of the poor in India and failed, leaving it to the governments of the day to decide what is poverty and how to era...

Address mental health issues early

The article "Address mental health issues early" by Sadaf Choudhary and Prasu Jain published in The Hindu Business Line today (February 4, 2026) is likely to be ignored by many because it is authored by two bureaucrats. Let's for once, go by the content. The issue raised concerns all of us. The article highlights that the Economic Survey just released has drawn attention to rising concerns related to digital addiction, loneliness and mental health and goes on to place on record that the Budget now before the Parliament explicitly reaffirmed the commitment to mental health and trauma care while announcing the setting up of a new national mental health institute on the lines of NIMHANS, along with the upgradation of existing centres at Ranchi and Tezpur. The concluding paragraph "Finally, it is our collective responsibility as a society to pay attention - to take "code reds"* seriously." is a message for all of us. *"code reds" briefly refer t...

Today, being January 30, newspapers and electronic media will remind us about Mahatma Gandhi and his dreams about India. Yes. Destiny created Mahatma from M K Gandhi who lived for 78 years and died premature succumbing to bullet injuries on Friday, January 30, 1948. We couldn't realise his dreams. The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind

The Book On My Table The Power Of Your Subconscious Mind By Joseph Murphy Suresh recommended this book. Ordered on Jan 14. Received just now. Good book for knowing more about the human potential. Humanity is the most selfish species in the Universe so far. Every individual, the moment sees the light, starts crying and believes and expects the world around existed to serve her/him. Going back to "Bhoomiyude Avakasigal" the individual forgets that her/his right to the resources available is the same as the earthworm or elephant and it is for the individual to recognise the challenges and meet them to capture the space allowed. This book will help us get out of the maze. More later.
