Rules to be followed while eating Dosa was interesting
(Had not noticed. Read now. During 1990's, a foreigner (I think from Switzerland) had come for some work to RBI. On a day he was wrapping up his work in RPCD I had to take a day's leave and before leaving he wanted to discuss with me something. My boss sent him to my house for a discussion over breakfast. We welcomed him with bread and Dosas for breakfast. We didn't have knife and fork etc. When dosa was served, the guest asked me to eat first. He easily learnt to eat Dosa using only right hand and used spoons only for taking chutney and sambar.-Warrier)

Dear Shri Warrier,
The majestic Collage is in our hand full of thought provoking articles, some spiritual, some informative and some plainly funny/humorous. Your suggestion on all inclusive living wages, social security ingredients and market realities as part of wage structure will become a reality one day. I don't know how the system of restoring OPS by some states would work when FM has categorically declared that the contributions made by the employees under NPS would not be returned to them. Something is fishy.
The article on ' Gold as productive asset' needs nation wide acceptance. The gold loans shine only for NBFCs . If the gold lying with Tirupati and Padmanabhan temples could be utilised productively, it would be a great boon for the country.
The replies by the New Orleans lawyer to the Federal Housing Agency are the stuff that prominent lawyers are made of. The lip smacking tidbits on Dosa are forcing me to have a bite for the same.
Regarding English, we need not worry how we pronounce, the Canadians, Australians and South Africans have their own ways to pronounce the words in English. In our own country, the Punjabis speak English with their own regional intonation and in Chennai, they speak English in Tamil.
A number of English speakers in the South are/were considered to be the best in the world e.g. Dr S Radhakrishnan, Ramaswami Aiyyar etc.
Regards,
Sitendra Kumar

Talked to EP yesterday. Advantage of talking to old friends is, one doesn't
have to explain so many things which one is trying to slowly forget.
After almost three decades, EP and I will be together in Thiruvananthapuram
one day during the last week of March 2023. Both of us took OERS in 2003,
EP in Bangalore and me in Mumbai.

An apt introduction to outside world for the renowned Malayalam Poet Edassery
Reviewed in India 🇮🇳 on 25 February 2023
"The Buddha, I and Leopards" is a collection of English translation of Edassery's select poems and two short stories by the poet's son. Added attraction is, inclusion of a short biographical note of Edassery, the renowned poet.
Meant to be an introduction of the poet to those who are not able to read Malayalam. Only very few of the celebrity Malayalam authors of last Century were lucky to have exposure to outside world through translation of their work. Thanks and Congratulations to Edassery family for this earnest initiative.

Media Responses : M G Warrier
1) When dissent is a positive sign
This refers to the reports about dissenting notes by two external members in the February 2023 MPC meeting. Categorisation of MPC members into internal and external by media could have been avoided. All the members are on the committee as professionals and the MPC since inception has been doing the job assigned to it professionally, within the constraints emanating from multiple ingredients in the inflation influencers, which are external to the impact of policy tools with RBI.
In the above context, Prof Ashima Goyal's observation that "Inflation has many administered price components and all regulators need to internalise the inflation target in order for it to be achieved" need to be taken in the true spirit.
The public feeling that "inflation is RBI's baby" should be removed first from the mindset of media and analysts. Fortunately the FM and the RBI are on the same page on inflation, as of now.

2) Standard gold*, Advantage India
This refers to the report 'WGC to digitise gold ecosystem' (The Hindu Business Line, February 23). The message WGC's Chief Executive David Tait is conveying here is significant for India. Imagine a day when India mainstreams, accounts and standardizes at least 50 percent of the country's estimated domestic gold stock of 25,000 tonnes. Besides the country's economic growth moving to fast track, the overall attitude of Indians to the yellow metal will change for the better.
If India decides to manage the gold the country owns productively, by providing facilities for conversion of domestic gold stock to standard gold, giving higher returns on gold deposits and increasing the component of gold in Banks' Statutory Liquidity Ratio (this doesn't even need a change in regulations!) and giving such other incentives as may be necessary, to reduce household gold stock, gold will play a hitherto unheard of proactive role in the country's economic growth.

Collage Debate : In praise of mistakes
https://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/readersblog/spiritedparagons/the-how-and-why-of-errors-and-mistakes-50670/
Excerpts :
In fact, there is no disgrace in committing mistakes. Error is a proof of an attempt ; Failure is an experience and Mistake is a lesson in the larger perspective. The Bhagawad Gita considers owning mistakes as a paramount virtue, though they delay spiritual growth and have Karmic consequences. Even Shishupala got 100 chances before Lord Krishna slayed him. Both Christianity and Islam emphasize on repentence as a pathway to Lord’s forgiveness. Buddhism exhorts people to acknowledge, make amends and move forward by learning from mistakes and insists that ” not going all the way and not starting ” are the only two mistakes one can commit in seeking truth.
So, committing mistakes, by itself, is neither shameful nor regressive. But not owning, not making amends and not learning from mistakes are potential obstacles to progress."
Posted online comments :
' a thoughtful piece. i appreciate the good teacher in you. there\'s nothing wrong in correcting mistakes. but there are people who enjoy pointing out mistakes to prove that they are wiser. the way in which you have presented the case that one need not be afraid of committing mistakes is excellent.'

Collage counseling
1) Where are your classmates❓
A 60 year old gentleman was suffering from deep depression and his wife booked an appointment with a counselor.
The wife said...
"He is in severe depression, please see to it.."
The Counselor began his counseling by asking some personal things while the gentleman's wife sat outside.
The gentleman spoke, and it went this way;
“I am too much worried. In fact, I am overwhelmed by worries - family issues, job pressure,
friends, children's education, and job tension, mortgage loan, car loan, etc.
I have lost interest in everything that I use to like. The world thinks of me as a cannon,
they think I have everything, but I don't have as much stuff as even cartridge. I am very depressed..”
Then the learned Counselor asked him, "which secondary school did you attend."
The gentleman told him the name of the school.
The counselor said,
I want to advise that you go to that school.
When you get to the school, locate your 'Class Register' if it is still there,
look up the names of your peers and try to get information about their current well being.
Write down all the information you get about them and meet me after a month..❗
The gentleman went to his former school, found the register, and copied every name in it.
There were 120 names in all. He tried day and night throughout one month,
but was barely able to collect information on about 75-80 of his classmates.
Surprise results ..❗
▪️20 of them were dead.
▪️7 were widows/widowers,
▪️13 were divorced.
▪️10 turned out to be drug addicts.
▪️5 came out so poor that nobody could even connect with them.
▪️6 turned out to be so rich that he couldn't believe it.
▪️Some were cancerous,
▪️some were paralyzed,
▪️some were diabetic,
▪️some asthmatic,
▪️sone heart disease patients.
▪️A couple of them were in bed with injuries to the arm/leg or spinal cord.
▪️The children of some had turned out to be insane, vagabonds, etc.
One was in jail.
One person after two divorces was seeking for a third marriage.
The counselor asked :
"Now tell me how is your depression❓"
The gentleman understood that
▪️he had no disease,
▪️he was not starving,
▪️his mind was perfect,
▪️he was not unlucky.
▪️He was lucky that his wife and children were very good and healthy.
▪️He was also healthy, he could afford three meals daily.
▪️His challenges paled in significance to that of others.
That gentleman realized that, there's really a lot of sorrow in the world, and that he was very happy and lucky.
Leave the habit of peeping into other people's plates (peoples fortune or misfortune), take the food on your plate with love.
Don't compare your life with others.
Everyone is moving according to his or her destiny, you are neither late nor early.
In everything,
good or bad,
great or small,
GIVE THANKS TO GOD FOR THE GOOD LIFE WE HAVE

2) Beautiful words Written by Sophia Loren (Italian Actress)
"When I got enough confidence, the stage was gone. When I was sure of Losing, I won. When I needed People the most, they Left me. When I learnt to dry my Tears, I found a shoulder to Cry on…… When I mastered the Skill of Hating, Someone started Loving me from the core of the Heart…… And, while waiting for Light for Hours when I fell asleep, the Sun came out… That's LIFE!! No matter what you Plan, you never know what Life has Planned for you…… Success introduces you to the World……. But Failure introduces the World to you……. ……Always be Happy!! Often when we lose Hope and think this is the end… God smiles from above and says, “Relax Sweetheart; It’s just a Bend, not the End..!"

Gala Weddings : Vathsala Jayaraman
From Jan 18 all Mandapams are full. Wedding season is in full swing.
There is a saying in Tamil "Veettaik Kattippaar; Kalyaanaththaip pannippaar"
("Difficulties can be realised only when you get involved in building a house or conducting the marriage"
In olden days all marriages were conducted at homes extending
the pandal to five or six houses.Sumptuous food was served in
the pyols (thinnais of all the houses)
Today bulk of the budget goes towards Wedding Halls.
There is no half day rent during heavy marriage season.
Even mini A/C Halls charge around Rs 50000 a day.
Caterers charge around Rs 6L for a two day decent wedding.
The venue, status of the host, and the guests also decide
the cost factors.
If finding a suitable match takes three years, the marriage
festivities take out a life time saving. With nuclear family
in place, parents dont mind.
Apart from the hall, food and jewels and garments, one is also
concerned with 'Return Gifts', classified severally between
near family members, extended families, close friends and
mere acquaintances. The issue that starts as a discussion
invariably ends in quarrels and conflicts spoiling the very
atmosphere. The person reaping the harvest is the Gift Shop owner.

Miscellaneous gift items* vary from stylish Tamboolam bags, statues of
Gods and Goddesses, jewellery bags, conch shell items,
Stone studded Holy Cross. These articles chosen
after much thought process, stainless steel items with
broken edges occupy the dirtiest corner of the attic of the guests,
ultimately attaining salvation merging into the garbage
in due course.
Tons and tons of instructions emphasizing the need for simple wedding have been in air. But who cares?
Perhaps this tradition believes in ATHITHi DEVO BHAVA.
But undue magnanimity keeps the guests in much embarassment
and vicious circle continues.
A new class of business 'WEDDING PLANNERS' has already crept in. Though elders may fume, modern guys and girls
consider it a prestige to have weddings arranged through
EVENT ORGANIZERS. Almost all wedding halls have turned into business houses repete with emotional exhortion or
emotional terrorism.
Marriage has attained the status of an industry that sprouts
a host of allied businesses. There is a boom in Real Estate, caterer, textile, jewellery, beauty parlour, vedic pundits, gift shops and so on.
In a year about 150 days are considered inauspicious.
Are the hosts compensating for no-business days?
Young brides and grooms, you spend many long hours
in planning your mega wedding. Get along. But add one
more agenda. Devote a few quality hours in realising
your social responsibility of assuring everlasting
marital harmony notwithstanding normal conflicts,a part
of married life. This is essence amounts to building a
a stable healthy society.
" Happiness is not a matter of intensity,
but of balance, order, rhythm and harmony."
