While it is true that India imports about 1000 tonnes of gold every year, it is also true that an estimated idle surface stock of over 24,000 tonnes of gold in the country is awaiting mainstreaming, accounting and productive deployment. Even accepting the reality that half of this stock may not be available for conversion to standard gold for religious and sentimental reasons, if the problem is approached rationally, the owners of at least 10,000 tonnes of the precious gold stock will be willing to get their gold standardized and invested productively. Temples like Tirupati and Guruvayoor have already deposited part of their gold stock with banks and are earning substantial income annually. Perhaps more institutions and individuals will follow suit, if Centre takes the initiative for introducing appropriate incentives.
