You may not believe, last month sometime I wanted to write this article. Yes, exactly on the lines Narayani Ganesh has written in ET on November 4, 2026 (ET, Speaking Tree). That day, I actually wrote a few sentences about retaining negative memories, repeating them often and getting them byheart, selective memory etc but couldn't organise my thoughts as beautifully as done in this Speaking Tree article.
We enjoy a poem best when the poet writes it in the language and tune we would have written it, if we had the skill.
For those who are lazy among you (like me!), I copy below the last para of the text I'm talking about :
"Again, it is a question of selective memory, whether voluntary or involuntary, depending on one's physical and mental health condition. Ultimately, we are what we are on account of our experiences that form our memories. So, it makes sense to try and make experiences happy ones so that we can cherish those memories."

Yesterday, searching for another book, I noticed a pre-publication proof copy of a small book titled "Moth's Kiss" by my daughter. A Google search revealed the book was published in March 2026. Ordered my copy. See A below to know more.

Amazon Book overview
Mihir and Leela arrive at Chesterfield Manor hoping to repair their failing marriage. The remote house in the hills promises silence, space, and a chance to begin again. But the manor holds secrets, and the longer they stay, the more Leela begins to change.
She hears things. Sees things. Feels something watching her.
Mihir believes it is grief, stress, and the weight of their past.
But the house has its own history. And something inside it has been waiting.
As isolation grows and reality begins to fracture, Mihir must
confront the truth about the
past-and about what is
happening to Leela-before
he loses her completely.
Moth's Kiss is a chilling story of love, guilt, and the thin line between the psychological and the supernatural.

Humans possess the remarkable ability to curate their memories, choosing which to hold dear and which to fade away. This process can lead to the creation of 'Photoshopped memories', subtly altered by our perceptions and imaginations. Interestingly, older adults often recall past events with greater clarity than recent ones, a phenomenon linked to selective memory.

Selective Memory
Selective memory (also known as selective amnesia) is the brain's tendency to recall certain details, events, or positive experiences while forgetting or downplaying others.
Key Characteristics & Causes
Emotional Bias : People naturally weight emotionally charged or self-serving experiences more heavily than neutral or painful details.
Defense Mechanism : It often acts as a subconscious shield against guilt, shame, trauma, or stress—allowing a person to protect their self-esteem or avoid accountability.
Relation to Gaslighting : When used in interpersonal conflicts, selective memory can manifest as forgetting your boundaries, pain, or valid reactions while vividly remembering your tone or perceived flaws to dodge responsibility.
Other Contributing Factors : It can be driven by everyday stress, sleep deprivation, cognitive aging, or clinical conditions like dissociative amnesia.
