Such a scientific view is not ingrained in the alphabet of other foreign languages. E.g. Ramanujan's first work on the Sangham poetry, captioned 'The Interior Landscape' is a selection of poems mostly from this anthology, which he translated into English. As we know, the love poems are landscape based. This is a special feature of Akam poetry. There is another specification that no character should be named. Generally there are three characters in the love poems : the woman, her lover and the go-between. They are referred to as He, She and Her Friend. Occasionally there will be a Foster Mother, a Concubine and Passers-by. In the Akam poems, persons involved are not as important as the location where the subject matter of the poem was presumed to have taken place. Like us, these ancients were environment conscious, though in a different way. Love poems fell into five groups depending upon the different landscapes of the large Tamil-speaking area : Kurinchi(the hills), Neytal(the seashore), Palai(the wasteland), Mullai(the forest) and Marutham(the lowland). Poems belonging to all these five categories are available in the above collection of poems. It is my humble wish to bring to the attention of the esteemed readers a poem each from these five categories. Let us start with a Kurinchi poem: What She Said (to her girl friend) "On the tall hill where the short-stemmed nightshade quivers a squatting cripple sights a honey hive above, points to the honey, cups his hands, and licks his fingers: so too, even if one's lover does not love or care, It still feels good inside just to see him now and then". The above poem was written by Paranar, one of the most prominent of the Sangham poets. It is the 60th poem in Kurunthokai. Whether Ramanujan could do full justice to the original poems is not and cannot be our concern. Our purpose is limited : Only to enjoy the beauty of the poems.
