I was 13 when 10th Anniversary of Independence Day was celebrated. In this short piece originally posted as a blog and recently included in my book "Open Book of Happy Memories"* (Pages 141-2), I am trying to recall the joy of celebrating the day.

Media Response
Independence Day Thoughts*
This refers to the report "Congress Plans Stir on August 22 Demanding JPC Probe Into Hindenburg Report "(Economic Times, August 14)
In parliamentary democracy, opposition in legislature houses has a responsible role to play which is constitutionally recognised and assigned in countries which have accepted democratic system of government. India is no exception.
But, in the initial years of free India, opposition was insignificant by numbers in legislative houses and were dependent on making their presence felt outside such forums. What we see today is the continuation of this tradition.
Time is opportune for a rethinking and central and state governments after taking the opposition benches in legislative houses into confidence, should make in-house consultations more participative and meaningful, reducing the need for opposition to depend on media and public meetings for getting their voice heard.

Collage Book Pick : The Last Heroes By P Sainath

Book overview
description
So who really spearheaded India's Freedom Struggle? Millions of ordinary people-farmers, labourers, homemakers, forest produce gatherers, artisans and others-stood up to the British. People who never went on to be ministers, governors, presidents, or hold other high public office.
They had this in common : their opposition to Empire was uncompromising.
In The Last Heroes, these footsoldiers of Indian freedom tell us their stories. The men, women and children featured in this book are Adivasis, Dalits, OBCs, Brahmins, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus. They hail from different regions, speak different languages and include atheists and believers, Leftists, Gandhians and Ambedkarites.
The people featured pose the intriguing question : What is freedom? They saw that as going beyond Independence. And almost all of them continued their fight for freedoms long after 1947.
The post-1947 generations need their stories.
To learn what they understood. That freedom and independence are not the same thing. And to learn to make those come together.

Excerpts :
"The Union Cabinet on September 9, 2015 gave its nod for Gold Monetisation Scheme which envisages deposit of gold with banks by public and Sovereign Gold Bond Scheme which will make it possible to deposit cash in bonds which will have a growth path tracking gold prices. Both deposits will carry interest and will be for fixed tenures, extendable in certain situations. Let us await more details, which will be available as and when banks announce their schemes. This is a welcome beginning.'"
