Story Gajendra Moksha is a famous Hindu mythological story from the Bhagavata Purana about the liberation of Gajendra, the king of elephants, by Lord Vishnu. Who Were They in Past Lives? Gajendra : In his previous birth, he was King Indradyumna, a great and pious devotee of Lord Vishnu. Due to a momentary lapse in respecting the sage Agastya, he was cursed to be born as an elephant. The Crocodile : In his previous life, he was a celestial musician named Huhu (Gandharva), who pulled the leg of Sage Devala as a prank and was cursed to become a crocodile. The Fateful Encounter Gajendra lived as the mighty ruler of a large herd of elephants near the beautiful Trikuta mountain. One hot day, he led his family to a pristine lake to cool off and gather lotus flowers for worship. As Gajendra stepped into the water, a fierce crocodile caught his leg in a vice-like grip. The Long Struggle Gajendra and the crocodile wrestled in the water for an immense period—traditionally said to be a thousand years. Gajendra used all his immense physical strength and the help of his herd, but nothing worked because the crocodile was in its own element. Eventually, his family left, his physical strength faded, and all his material resources were completely exhausted. The Prayer and Liberation Realizing that no mortal help or personal pride could save him, Gajendra surrendered completely. He lifted a single lotus flower high with his trunk and called out to Lord Vishnu with pure devotion and helplessness. Moved instantly by this true surrender, Lord Vishnu arrived riding on his eagle carrier, Garuda. Vishnu hurled his divine discus, the Sudarshana Chakra, cutting off the crocodile's head and freeing Gajendra. The crocodile regained his original Gandharva form, and Gajendra received a divine spiritual body before ascending to Vaikuntha (the spiritual realm).
