It is an unforgettable experience for those who love Melam because top Melam maestros perform here every year with their troupe. An air of festivity descends on the village during the Navaratri days and a unique sight at Navami festival here is the active participation in Melam by Women of Kodunthirappully Agraharam, which you cannot find elsewhere in Kerala and they are serious about it. In another poem 'The Princess' he wrote: "Man for the field and woman for the hearth; Man for the sword and for the needle she." These equally famous (for progressive social thinkers notorious) lines echoed the Victorian concept on women's position in society in general and as regards women franchise in particular. (The position of Indian women perhaps would have been the same had we followed the great Manu for framing our Constitution). The struggle for voting right for women started in England towards the end of the 19th century. Two women's organizations were active in the field : one modest and the other aggressive. Bertrand Russell, who was convinced that women should have voting rights on a par with men, joined the former and, in 1907, contested election as its candidate from Wimbledon knowing quite well that there was no hope to win as it was a stronghold of the Conservatives. It was meant only as an awareness campaign. As a campaigner he won, but as a candidate, he lost miserably to hisTory opponent. In later years Russell contested two more elections and lost both belying Tennyson's famous line('third time may prosper') Of course, he could sit in the Parliament later in 1931 as a Lord in the upper house on the death of his brother. There he made a mark through a famous speech on atomic warfare. In1910, when the strenuous work on 'Principia Mathematica' was just over, Russell wished to contest the general election that had taken place that year. He expressed his wish to the Liberal Party which called him for an interview to consider his suitability although they acknowledged his position as a philosopher and mathematician. The interview that took place at the party's Bedford branch ran on these lines : Q : Are you a member of the Church of England? A : No. I grew up as a Non-Conformist* Q : Are you still a Non-conformist? A : No. Q : Do you want us to think that you are a godless agnostic? A : Yes. That will be correct. Q : Are you willing to go to the Church occasionally ? A : No. I am not willing. Q : What about your wife. Will she be going to the Church sometimes? A : No. She won't be. Q : Is there a chance that people may know that you are a non-believer in God? A : Yes. There is a chance. No more questions were asked. Naturally he was not offered a ticket. One does not know if our national parties have a practice like this to judge the suitability of a political fortune seeker. Russell dropped the idea of contesting the election that time. *A member of a Protestant Church which does not follow the beliefs of the established Church of England. C Life 1) Birthday and Date of Birth* : M G Warrier This October 15 (Today), I will be completing 77 years, officially. Born on August 9, 1944, there's a time-lag of 60 plus days between my Birthday and Date of Birth. I'm fortunate to have three birthdays in a year since 1958 when I came to know my official date of birth is 15101944. This is how I came to know about my Date of Birth as per my school records : When I was in Class XI (SSLC), I was called to school office. I was given a form in which a fitness certificate was to be obtained from a doctor without which I will not be allowed to appear for SSLC Examination in March 1959 as I would not be fourteen and a half years old by that time (Now I know, if my correct DOB was on records this problem would not have arisen!) (Continued at H1) *Blog : Link will be shared. 2) Convey Thanks : Vathsala Jayaraman Yesterday I received a long mail in Tamil from my grandniece, ( my sister's grand daughter) aged 27. While wishing me for the New Year, she conveyed with tears her gratitude to her dear father. I am giving an extract of the mail in English. She fondly remembers how her dear father packed nearly 12 tiffin boxes daily nearly for 20 years. She lost her mother in an accident in Bangalore when she was just 21 days old in 1993. She has a twin sibling brother and an elder sister. (Continued at H2) A Malayalam Movie Song* : https://youtu.be/f4kNxdmjW_w (*Nandi Aarodu Njan Chollendu...) Today, some of us, despite having a perennial income stream and health insurance to fall back, plus, fairly dependable always and in all circumstances, family/friends circle to support us, feel insecure. I respect that power which helped Nambiar to continue with whatever work came his way, accepting himself as what he was. Try and you will be able to remember a ‘Nambiar’ whom you have met at some stage in your life. 2) Thought for the day* *Forward received from P P Ramachandran via Group mail TWO WOLVES One evening an old Apache told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people. He said, "My son, the battle is between two wolves inside us all. "One is Evil - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego." "The other is The Spirit - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith." The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather : "Which wolf wins?" The old Apache simply replied, "The one you feed.." Forget about the future, you can't predict it. And forget about the present, I didn't get you one. Happy birthday!” H 1) Continued from B1 Next day, my father took me to the town 5 miles away and we waited in the portico of a doctor's clinic with other patients for our turn. Once we could meet the doctor, as he was fortunately aware of the requirement, he immediately made the certificate, affixed a rubber stamp and gave it in my hands with his blessings to come up in life. We still owe his fees which he didn't accept that day. The doctor asked my father to consider the one rupee coin offered as his "Dakshina" for prayers (my father was in his Namboodiri attire with bare upper body!) I'm fortunate, as I get reminded about my birthday thrice a year. My parents and sisters knew my birthday by the Star and Malayalam month. The real date, August 9 is known to my family. My friends know only my "official" DOB. And I am blessed with several friends including you reading this just now. Today, my friend V Rangarajan shared this beautiful reminder : "When God forgets to tie some people in Blood relations, He corrects this mistake by making them Friends." Sometimes such statements give deeper meaning to things which we may already know. People much younger to you will tell you, "age is just a number". I'm aware, it's not true. Every birthday takes you nearer to the next transition. But that reality need not bother one, so long as reasonable good physical and mental health remain friendly. This is not an expression of craze for longevity. Last week, Asha Sharat gave a beautiful message to the youngsters who ignorantly think that these oldies are clinging to life occupying crowded space, because of their greed to enjoy more. In her tribute to her loving father who left the stage recently, she said : "Dad has surrendered his mortal existence to the "Panchabhootaas". Many thought, Dad loved long life. Some of us were aware that his attachment was not to the celebration that is life. Now, it dawns clearly from the silent voice of Panchabhootaas of which Dad is an integral part, that, the purpose of his fight with the stronger ailments that pulled him down, was not guided by greed to enjoy longer life. He wanted to remain a strong pillar of support for mother and me who were groping in the dark after suffering different kinds of shock. Yes, our mind was going blank again and again, succumbing to hell-like situations. Remaining an example himself, living a righteous life of a Karma Yogi, he held our hands tightly..." Children who have understood you during your lifetime are an asset to any parents. Lucky, me too! I've diverted from my Birthday which is supposed to be the subject of this piece. The 60 plus days I gained "officially" by a wrongly recorded DOB, lingered as a pain for me till I opted for retirement 13 months prior to the actual date of superannuation. But, even that was after receiving remuneration from employers for more than 40 years from August 1, 1963! Sometime back I read somewhere, in the context of the book "Preparing for Death", Arun Shourie was publishing Shourie's friend mentioned to him : "Perhaps, by now we have more friends on the other side of the fence!" Fence was a reference to the border between life and death. Having said that my own view is, "Don't trouble the trouble, till trouble troubles you!" (Borrowed from my friend Vartak...I talked to him last week) ***. ***. *** 2) Continued from C2 Her father managed alone with the help of a day care home in Bangalore, who took care of the kids from 9 A M to 6.30 P M daily. Her father used to get up at 4 A M, cook for the kids, pack feeding bottles in early stages and lunch boxes later. He used to replace bundles of diapers, alternate dresses for use when they got wet. He never forgot to take dosages of syrups, medicines etc etc as prescribed by the paediatrician. "Shiva is called Ardhanareeshwaran as he had shared left half of his body to Parvathi; but my father was all in all a 100% mother for us three" she narrates with tears. "He never forgot to pack even sanitary napkins for us when we attained age" she has recollected. 24 years have rolled since she lost her mother, whom she has never even seen. Her father was just 32 when her mother died. Had he wanted, he would have married again citing bringing up children as a pretext. She remembers with gratitude the 'baby care home' as 'maai kaa ghar'( mother's house.) and the beloved maid sister as her own mother. Today packing and delivering has become multimillion business. Home serving is a big business in cities. You just prepare rice in a cooker. The curries, Sambar and Rasam are delivered even before you leave for your office. The food, though costly a bit, is home made, tasty and does not harm your digestive system. Leave alone the global Amazon, just think of the woman who comes to collect the thrash bags daily from our houses, the person who comes to sweep and mop the staircase and surrounding areas, the 'ironing' man who collects washed clothes and delivers pressed neat office dress and uniforms for kids. A girl daily supplies two muzham of flowers to decorate the divine portraits. I will be failing in my duty if I don't thank the automan who took my kids to school and left them back at home, even when I was going for work. Sometime back I received this message through mail : Air Commodore Vishal was a Jet Pilot. In a combat mission his fighter plane was destroyed by a missile. He however ejected himself and parachuted safely. He won acclaims and appreciations from many. After five years one day he was sitting with his wife in a restaurant. A man from another table came to him and said "You're Captain Vishal! You flew jet fighters. You were shot down!" "How in the world did you know that?" asked Vishal. "I packed your parachute," the man smiled and replied. Vishal gasped in surprise and gratitude and thought if parachute hadn't worked, I wouldn't be here today. Vishal couldn't sleep that night, thinking about that man. He wondered how many times I might have seen him and not even said 'Good Morning, how are you?' or anything because, "I was a fighter pilot and that person was just a safety worker" So friends, who is packing your parachute? Everyone has someone who provides what they need to make it through the day. We need many kinds of parachutes– we need the physical parachute, the mental parachute, the emotional parachute, and the spiritual parachute. We call on all these supports before reaching the destination safe. Sometimes in the daily challenges that life gives us, we miss what is really important. We may fail to say hello, please, or thank you. Congratulate someone on something wonderful that has happened to them, give a compliment, or just do something nice for no reason. As you go through our life's journey, recognize the people who packed your parachute. Let us thank everyone who helped us one way or the other by way of our words, deeds, prayers etc!! I thank my grand niece whose mail induced me to write this snippet. Vathsala Jayaraman
