Today's focus is on Independence Day. Thanks for making Collage so popular. Feeling humbled 🙏-Warrier Happy Independence Day M G Warrier Messages from Readèrs 1) Dr Prabha Ramadurai Thank you Shri Ramasubramanian for your nice gesture and appreciation on my write up. It will not be self boasting if I say that I got an opportunity to come across varieties of cases with psychosomatic disorders. I could understand and used to be awe struck to see the type of problems, especially of women folk (both working and home makers). I owe a lot to Collage for giving us a platform to mingle, interact and have lively chat on various topics including experiences and keep engaged our mind and spirit after retirement. Prabha Ramadurai 2) Vivek Amin Nagpur : "Congratulations to OUR Collage although only a year old but dishing out knowledge of wisdom of our liking since ages." A Good Man and Great Man* Greatness is based on worldly attributes. The great man is able to attract people. The good man tries to sustain himself by his own efforts. The difference between the two has to be clearly recognised. The great man enjoys many luxuries and amenities. He has thus many physical comforts. The good man experiences the bliss of the Divine. Greatness has a Rajasic quality. Goodness bears a Sattvic quality. Good persons should try to develop Sattvic qualities. Greatness is often associated with persons who have likes and dislikes, attachments and hatred, and who have an inflated ego. Goodness expresses itself in pure joy and unselfish service to others. Dharma (right conduct) is like a mirror. It reveals to you what is your duty towards your parents, your friends and others. "How You Discharge Your Duties will determine how You Yourself Fare Later In Life." India was declared Independent Nation and we are all secular with casteless Indians. With Equality, Fraternity, Justice and Liberty framed by the constitution : Subsequently : Regular flag hoisting of The National Flag this year is marred by Corona in various places. Having completed 74 years after Independence, we are entering 75th year, Platinum Jubilee year, a special feature this year. We all jointly pray wherever we are hoping for the best to happen. Something special we wish boosting our morale to a higher level of satisfaction, also making The Nation big, in all fields. Many of us may not be knowing the design of our National flag and the main person responsible for making it great as he is forgotten by us all Today.. He is none other than Pingala Venkayya, 86,( 2=8=1876 to 4=7=1963 ) Who was the designer , an Indian freedom fighter...also known as Jhanda Venkiah.. He was an authority in Geology, Agriculture and also an Educationist who set up educational institution in Machilinipatnam. He was largely forgotten by the Society and people like us now Today. Not only that he died In utter poverty in the end. A pitiable situation uncared for...at that time. However we forget the past remembering him and pray on this day for the service rendered by The Noble Soul to The Nation and for people like us duly getting inspired. The size of the flag is 2:3 Ratio , indicating five Panchaboothas, and the three colors are symbolic to: Saffron is Strength and Courage, while White is Path of Truth and Conduct and Green is Soil / Plant, making us to work which is worship without getting freebies. Chakra in the middle has 24 Spokes beginning with Love, ending with Hope. Love, Courage, Patience, Peace, Magnanimity, Goodness, Faith, Gentleness, Selflessness, Self Control, Self Sacrifice, Truthfulness, Righteousness, Justice, Mercy, Gracefulness, Humility, Loyal, Sympathy, Spiritual Knowledge, Forgiveness, Honesty, Eternity, Hope.. We once again pray today for Harmony to prevail everywhere by our combined effort. Love. Dissolves. Hate Compassion Calms. Passion Cooperation. Evokes. Love Kindness. Melts. Cruelty We all bow making others to bend making the country prosperous.. Taking a Pledge ...on this day ....the 15th August, Platinum year, 2021. V T Panchapagesan 3) Legislative proceedings* : M G Warrier Recent proceedings in legislatures including both houses of Parliament have been less than acceptable by any standard. Hours and days of man-hours are being wasted without any serious debates on issues affecting the citizens of the constituencies which the respective legislators represent. Protests and shouting should follow the business hours when the scheduled business should be conducted in an orderly manner. A media report says, in Kerala recently the entire opposition walked out of the Assembly Hall and conducted "Mock Assembly" outside after electing ministers and office-bearers like speaker and opposition leader from among themselves. If they are serious the procedure should be formalised and the proceedings shared for the benefit of public. Like in Britain, opposition having a "Shadow Government" studying and deliberating on national issues is a good idea. M G Warrier Mumbai *Slightly edited version of a letter to the editor sent on August 13,2021. 4) Partition Horrors Remembrance https://www.thehindu.com/news/national/pm-modi-declares-august-14-as-partition-horrors-remembrance-day/article35907824.ece Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Modi tweeted, “Partition's pains can never be forgotten. Millions of our sisters and brothers were displaced and many lost their lives due to mindless hate and violence. In memory of the struggles and sacrifices of our people, 14th August will be observed as Partition Horrors Remembrance Day” C Book Review : Freedom At Midnight https://notevenpast.org/freedom-midnight-1975/ Despite this focus on the agency of the great men, the primary mechanism which forces history forward in the book is destiny or fate. In this account, the British were “a race that God had destined” to rule the Indians, and therefore “naturally acquired” India. Faced with the prospect of division, Mountbatten must “save India” from itself. This device frees Mountbatten and the British from the charge of poorly handling or rushing independence. Instead, they are depicted as contending with historical inevitabilities far more powerful than themselves. While a current reader does not expect a highly sympathetic and nuanced portrait of India from a book written three years before Edward Said’s Orientalism, and the rise of post-colonial studies, as a narrative with insight into the rush of daily life on the cusp of independence, it remains an enjoyable and exciting read. D Thoughts around Onam : Vathsala Jayaraman Onam is celebrated in Kerala marking the arrival of their erstwhile ruler Mahabali once a year. The story of Mahabali is well known to everyone. Mahavishnu, as Vamana asked for land that could be measured by his three foot steps. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew into Trivikrama, measuring patala with one giant step and the whole earth with another giant leap. At the request of Mahabali he placed his third step on the head of Mahabali ensuring Moksha to Mahabali and granted boons fulfilling his desire of visiting his subjects for a day once in a year, himself (Thrivikrama) escorting the King- that is celebrated as Onam in Kerala. Now the question arises that Kerala is stated to be God's own country formed by Parasurama, the 6th incarnation of Vishnu. While Kerala itself was formed during the 6th Avatar of Vishnu, the question arises how Mahabali would have ruled the non existing Kerala during the earlier period of Vamana, the 5th Avatar of Mahavishnu. A logical doubt! Mahabali's empire spanned the whole of creation, not just the tiny strip of land that is Kerala. He gave away this whole empire to Vamana as the first two of the three steps he promised and for the third step he gave away himself and attained Moksha. However, he returns to this world once a year for Onam. Perhaps he chose Kerala to be the spot for this annual visit because it is the land founded by Parasurama, or perhaps it's just that it's only the people of this land that chose to celebrate his visit. Another assumption: After Lord Parashuram's rampage over the evil Kshatriyas he resorted to penance and Lord Shiva appeared before him and granted a boon to rule a land. Parashurama threw his axe from Gokarna to kanyakumari and hence Kerala was formed. Now this Kerala never had people so he had to gather people from different geographies (probably from Karnataka, AP,TN. Mahabali's paradise was never in Kerala. It's just that the people who used to celebrate Mahabali's arrival every year in AP, Karnataka of TN came to Kerala and celebrated as a remembrance of their culture there. Years later it became Onam and Kerala's own festival. Parashurama did not invent Kerala. He is said to have prevented the advancing ocean from flooding Kerala. So Kerala existed even earlier to Parasurama and the name 'God's Own Country'-as if it was a new discovery, by Parasurama, seems to lack even mythological evidence. Somehow the Mythology prevailed only over Kerala and Onam is branded as the Festival of Kerala though Onam Sadya is served throughout the country in all the restaurants and even in foreign countries on this day. Keralites may offer suitable explanations. Happy Onam! Thrivikrama Tathwam : Please see H Vathsala Jayaraman (I don't think there's any link between Onam or Parasurama and the current branding of Kerala as "God's Own Country". Someone has done research. Here's a recent write-up : https://thestrategystory.com/2021/01/15/kerala-tourism-gods-own-country/amp/ The "country" of Travancore surrendered to God (Sripadmanabha) covers only few Southern districts of present Kerala and parts of one district in the present Tamil Nadu. Parashurama's axe may be representative of deforestation for habitation-Warrier) E President's Message : 1) Independence Day 2020 https://knowindia.gov.in/independence-day-celebration/president-speech.php 2) Independence Day 2021 https://youtu.be/W3dHmMY5HBU F News you can use IFFK 2021 26th International Film Festival of Kerala(IFFK) : December 10-17, 2021 Copied below is a message received from Team IFFK : Dear M Govinda Warrier, Greetings from the IFFK team! Hardly a day passes without its being extolled, but some people's idea of it is that they are free to say what they like, but if anyone else says anything back, that is an outrage." Winston Churchill (Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill, KG, OM, CH, TD, DL, FRS, RA was a British statesman who served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945, during the Second World War, and again from 1951 to 1955. H Thrivikrama Tathwam Onam is celebrated in Kerala marking the arrival of their erstwhile ruler Mahabali once a year. The story of Mahabali is well known to everyone. Mahavishnu, as Vamana asked for land that could be measured by three foot steps of Vamana. When Mahabali agreed, Vamana grew into Trivikrama , measuring patala with one giant step, the whole earth with another giant leap. At the request of Mahabali he placed his third step on the head of Mahabali ensuring Moksha to Mahabali and granted fulfilling his desire of visiting his subjects for a day- that is celebrated as Onam in kerala. Onam brings in memories of Mahabali and Vamana who turned into Trivikrama. Unlike other Avatars this story speaks equally the greatness of the Lord as well as the devotee. Mahabali's words after he was warned by Sukracharya deserves special mention 'prana( life) and Maana ( honour) are the eyes of a human being.Even at the cost of life,'honour' should be protected.Granting that the young boy is Vishnu,I should be the most fortunate, since the Lord who is the giver, has come to seek something from me'.This need not be construed as pride. Had Vishnu desired ,he would have strightaway killed Mahabali, as he killed Hiranyakasipu, Ravana or Kamsa. But He preferred to teach a great tatwa to humanity-Trivikrama tatwa. Mahabali wanted to perform a great yaga called'Vishwajit Yaga' Vishwa denotes the pancha boothas(5 elements),pancha Indriyas(5 senses) and pancha koshas( 5 sheaths of human body). It is the victory of such a vishwam that the yaga symbolises. That can be done only by a person who stands superior to the Lord at least for a moment. When Indra propitiated Vishnu to help him retaining Indra padvi, Vishnu agreed. When Lord took over the form of Vamana and asked for a and to the extent covered by His three feet,as a seeker he becomes inferior to Mahabali for the time being. Now Vaman takes upper hand, takes a giant form of Trivikrama . Lord Vishnu takes special care to be the progeny of Kasyapa representing Purusha tatwa, and Aditi representing 'Praakriti' or Nature and to be born as a dwarf child only to grow into a giant form at the appropriate hour, measuring the earth by one leap and the patala by the second leap This aspect of Trivikrama tatwam is represented by Gayatri mantra '-Bhur, Bhuvaha and Suvaha',the Bhuloka, bhuvvar Loka and Suvar Loka'. It is wrong to conceive the three lokas as existing one above the other extending to the height of thousands of kilometres.and struggling even to reach it by imagination..The three lokas are intertwined with each other and one exists within the other. The real meaning of this kind of geometrical configuration of three lokas is that the pancha Indriyas, pancha boothas and pancha koshas( senses, elements and sheaths) -these aspects of human body is Bhuloka. The aspect of ManasTatwam is Bhuvar Loka. The microscopic state of Bliss or Anandam is the Suvar Loka.. The totality of these three represent Trivikrama Tatwam. These three aspects of Trivikrma Tatwam can be understood in terms of three states of individual. 1.The one you think you are( Deha) 2.The one others think you are.( Manas) 3.The one you really are( Bliss) Only by sadhana one can reach the Bliss after passing through bhuloka through bhuvar loka. The disintegration of Moha or desires(Moha +kshayam) leads to Moksham as was given to Mahabali. He gave away everything he possessed notwithstanding being warned by his Guru Sukracharya and landed straight in Moksha. The reception of such a great king demonstrating the Trivikrama Tatwa with the grace of Vamana is being celebrated as Onam. Though it is marked by Pookalam( floral decorations) onakkali, dance, and a heavy lunch called s Onam sadya, the spiritual significance of Onam is not to be lost sight of. Vathsala Jayaraman
