Exit Polls and Equity Market
Elections to the 18th Lok Sabha held in seven phases spread over few weeks had several ingredients of a festival and was equally expensive. Polls, Exit Polls, Propaganda and media coverage all were informative and entertaining.
I don't agree with the allegations about the expenses incurred on travel etc of leaders in connection with the election campaign. Major part of such expenditure was for travel, security etc which would have been incurred, election lr no election.
Perhaps the exit polls and the build up before the counting of votes and declaration of results helped only media houses and advertising agencies....
Upto the above I wrote on June 3, 2024. Now it is 8 p m on June 4, 2024. This morning I watched an economist struggling to explain how stock markets are manipulated by corporate stakeholders. She referred to page 139 of a thick book she was holding, claiming that the book was published before second World War.
Economists are trying to teach History. Finally, on Friday I checked how the Sensex behaved during the first week of June 2024. True, one day it shed 4000 points. But during the week it gained overall 1000 plus points. Nothing abnormal.

Introduction to Bhagavad Gita

The other day, I was reading an article in which the writer joked :
"I had a dream which I enjoyed thoroughly. Midway I woke up. I found it difficult to adjust myself to reality and wanted to convince myself that the dream was real and wanted to continue the post-interval dream. I went inside the net (mosquito net, man!) and tried to sleep again."
What happened subsequently is not relevant. The issue the writer raised is. Is the real life real?
The limited knowledge about life when I am readying to cross eighty tells me certain things in life are real. Like hunger, pain, emotions, ailments etc
It's better to address them from the modern "palliative care" angle. Treat the symptoms first.
My grandmother used to read Bhagavatham everyday morning for half an hour or till the call from the kitchen for breakfast comes, whichever is earlier. Her practice was to open the 4 inch thick book kept on a wooden X-shaped stand at random and start reading from the top of the left hand page. Her mood for the day will be set, depending on the part of the story appearing on that page.
The context for telling you the story is, today I have picked up a 224 page Bhagavad Gita and was contemplating which chapter will suit my mood today. Then I was Google searching to find out the relationship of Krishna with Arjuna. They are cousins according to Google Aunty. And most of the fellows on either side ready to fight the battle are related to each other like in a Malabar Joint Family of early 20th Century. And, believe me the war originated from issues arising out of a partition of assets, mostly land and real estate type. With this understanding come back and listen to what Krishna tells Arjuna.

Book on my table : A Fly on the RBI WALL
I thought I had finished publishing and buying books in 2023. But when someone whom I knew during her entire stay in RBI publishes her story, I was tempted to order a copy. Her skills were not fully taken advantage of by RBI. Despite having created space for herself as regards the role assigned to her, my perception is that she would have contributed more if she had migrated to the mainstream within the RBI. That part of the story, I think, she has withheld for her next book.

RBI surplus transfer*
Apropos the article "Decoding RBI's surplus transfer to govt" (The Hindu Business Line, June 6), the caution against habit formation as regards expectations of GOI about future receipts from the central bank is timely. Full central budget is likely to be presented next month and going by the past track record the possibility of pressure on RBI to support financially cannot be underplayed.
That the CRF has now maintained at the upper end of the band recommended by Jalan Panel is no consolation. The level had reached almost 12 percent in 2009 and from there it came down to less than half that when Jalan Panel examined the adequacy of reserves. The need to strengthen the balance sheet by augmenting reserves was recognised, as the share capital remains static at 5 crore.
As the income flow, risk perceptions and size of balance sheet are undergoing changes, it is time to consider capitalising a part of the reserves and upward revision of reserve requirements.
