Guruvayur Ekadasi 2026

Guruvayur Ekadasi 2026 Guruvayur Ekadasi 2026 is on November 21, 2026. Guruvayur Ekadasi Vilakkutsavam Thirty Days of Devotional Light and Spectacle There is no single specific story behind the 30-day Vilakkutsavam (lamp festival) leading up to the Guruvayur Ekadasi; instead, behind this long celebration lies a rich tradition and a history of offerings by devotees. The reasons and the backstory behind these thirty days of lamps are as follows: The 30-day lamp is an offering by devotees : As the day of Guruvayur Ekadasi approaches, the crowd of devotees at the temple increases and the celebrations become grander. Starting exactly 30 days before Ekadasi, the night-time lamp procession (Vilakkeduthu) and surrounding lamps (Chuttuvilakku) are conducted every day as an individual or collective offering (Vazhipadu). While royal families and feudal lords used to sponsor this in the past, today various individuals, ancestral families (Tharavadus), the postal department, and organizations like the Merchants Association take turns sponsoring the lamps for each day. The offering for each day's lamp is dedicated in the name of the respective sponsor. Connection with the Mandala period : Usually, with the birth of the Malayalam month of Vrischikam, Mandala poojas and special rituals begin at prominent temples in Kerala. In Guruvayur, the 30-day Vilakkutsavam is structured to start right from the beginning of Vrischikam—or one month prior to Ekadasi—and conclude on Ekadasi day. This transforms into a month-long, deeply devotional ritual period. Legendary background : Ekadasi is the day associated with Lord Vishnu’s Ananthashayana concept (reclining posture on Adishesha) and the day the idols were consecrated jointly by Guru (Brihaspati) and Vayu. In addition, it is believed that during this sacred time, the Lord directly appeared before and blessed great devotees like Poonthanam and Melpathur. Incorporating all these special significances, these thirty days are arranged in a way that brings devotees closer to the Lord, illuminating the temple with daily lamp displays. Significance of ghee lamps (Neyvilakku) : Most of the lamps during these 30 days are 'ghee lamps' associated with the night-time Athazha Sheeveli (temple procession). A large crowd gathers to witness this lamp procession accompanied by the golden Kolam (caparisoned elephant ornament). Finally, on the 30th day, these celebrations conclude with the Devaswom-sponsored lamp on the night of Ekadasi. (Content shared by Shaji Kurup, Ex-NABARD)
