Yesterday in Sun TV there was the telecast of the film Thiruvilaiyadal elaborating four or five Shiva Lilas in detail. Nakkeera's episode is the famous one. The king raised a question as to whether the hair of women is fragrant by nature itself or it acquires the aroma only thro scents used by them. At the request of a local poet, Lord Shiva sends his answer in a verse highlighting the natural aroma of women's hair . The famous poet Nakkeera contests the same saying, "Even if Shiva opens his third eye, the conception of Lord Shiva is totally wrong. When we analyse the facts through the modern research findings we find many interesting informations. From Day 1 , we are protecting our hair by applying green gram powder, Shikakaai powder, coconut oil etc etc. Hair dressing is treated as an art. It is true that the hair also receives fragrance thro scents etc. What does the science say? Animals release a chemical called PHERMONES. The word is derived from the combination of PHRENE and HARMONE. Even ants utilize this harmone to communicate with other ants of opposite sex. The chemical is notified as 'excitement carrier'. To feel this chemical the creatures need an organ VNO (Vomero Nasal Organ) The science world has all along been under the impression that human beings have neither this hormone nor the organ. But recent researches have clearly proved that human beings have both the hormone and the organ. It is this PHERMONE that induces sex attraction and romantic emotions, they confirm. They add that 90% of Phermone is released from female head and hair. With this fact in hand if we analyse the controversial verse in KURUNTHOGAI, a different picture may arise. One can say boldly : "Nakkeera, you are wrong!" Nakkeera may have to change his strong dialogue with Lord Shiva. Thiruvalluvar says that once the hair is removed from the head, it is absolutely useless. But human hair is considered an asset earning foreign exchange in millions. We feel disgusted even to find a small bit of hair in our meals. It is no surprise that a chemical known as 'L-cysteine taken out of hair is used in making biscuits, chocolates and Pizzas and many other food products. D Readers Write Koodiyattam and Chakyar Koothu V Babusenan "Sanskrit drama has a special place in world drama and Koodiyattam, as its extant form, has been recognized as 'a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage Of humanity ' by UNESCO. Chakyar Koothu is an offshoot of Koodiyattam and both these performing art forms were, until the middle of the last century, confined to temple premises in Kerala. Chakyar Koothu is an offshoot of Koodiyattam in the sense that the clown in the latter is the single performer in the former. It is called Chakyar Koothu because the performer has always been from the Chakyar community in Kerala. In a sense, it belongs to the genre of Harikadha Kalakshepam and present day Kadhaprasangam. It is more akin to the latter in that musical skill is not an essential factor whereas oratorial skill is. Accompaniments are minimal in Koothu -one Mizhavu ( an one-sided percussion instrument that looks like a big earthenware jar) and a pair of ilatthalam. The performer is attired like a clown, no doubt. He wears a headgear that resembles a snake's hood, his face is striped in white, yellow and black and adorned with a mustache with one end twirled up and the other end turned down and the upper part of the body mostly smeared with sandal wood paste and vibhuthi and decorated with red spots here and there. The story he tells is one from Ramayanam or Mahabharata, based always on some Sanskrit text, but the narration is in stylized spoken Malayalam full of satire, sarcasm and pure humour, laced with anecdotes taken from daily life. While assuming different roles, his intonation is marvellous and his acting is wonderful. Identification of a character in the story with any member of the audience is a unique feature of Chakyar koothu. For instance, if the Chakyar is narrating the story say, Kalyaana Sougandhikam, he can, if he wants, identify anyone among the listeners as Hanuman and is at full liberty to say anything he feels like saying. He may even use abusive language but nothing should be taken personally. If he or she objects, the Chakyar will stop his performance forthwith. Not only that. Koothu will not be performed in that place later! This stringent rule applies even to the king. Some of the very talented performers had taken advantage of this rule. Koothambalam, the temple theatre, was where Koodiyattam and Koothu used to be performed (This continues even now.) Those who visited Guruvayoor, Vadakkunnathan (Trissur) and Koodalmanikkam (Irinjalakkuda) temples would have seen Koothambalams constructed under the specifications laid down by Bharata Muni .The art-loving people of Kerala and elsewhere should be grateful to the late Padmasree Maani Madhava Chakyar for his bold action in taking these two performing arts to the public arena.
