I've not checked. This writer may be young. Or, because he talks about a walking stick, he may be ripe old. I have read a lot about enjoying 'retired' life in retirement villas/homes written by people below 65. They talk about games, tours, reading, writing, hobbies and so on and the freedom from work, family and other hurdles that had all along prevented them from "enjoying" life. Post-65 oldies' literature is not that lousy.
