It is offered as "Homam Sadhanam" and the balance is neivedhyam and becomes Prasadam. What a lovely taste, even though it is shared by 32 members in our family" 2) R Jayakumar Shri Vishnu Kelkar is a greatly blessed and fortunate person to be the family priest to perform Ganapati Puja at home for 70 years, and also more to come. Starting at the age of 8 and doing this uninterruptedly for seventy years may not be so easy to happen for others. We know life is full of uncertainties and surprises. Anything like change of residence, job transfer, sickness, and other pressing responsibility could have made it difficult to keep up the tradition. But today he is a proud and happy person to narrate to us this special achievement in life. Distributing and eating a sweet item is the common occurrence for all celebrations in life, religious or otherwise. Whether diabetic or not we don't want to miss prasadam because prasadam is always sweet. My congratulations and good wishes to Shri Kelkar and greetings to all on the occassion of Ganapati Festival. This article is not about the progress made in the research on the subject. Let's discuss how common man who finds timepass difficult due to the present restrictions look at the planning aspects of time management. Before that let me share a couple of recent experiences I had. Scenario I The other day my grandson who is in Class XII was with me with the Stop Watch on his mobile on and doing something on a page in a thick book. I was curious. When he was free I found out that he was taking a test for which the time allotted was 3 minutes and he could finish it in 159 seconds with a score of 26/30. But what was an eye opener for me was, he further explained that his score would have been better if he had utilized full 3 minutes! Scenario II A Malayalam TV Channel has a programme "Oru Chiri, Iru Chiri, Bumper Chiri!" (One Smile, Two Smiles, Bumper Smile!) : There are three Judges on the dais. One performer singly or with a companion is allowed 4 minutes to perform a comedy show or a "Stand up Comedy"and make the judges laugh. If one judge smiles, the prize money is Rs 5,000, if two judges laugh, Rs 15,000 and if all the three laugh within the time allotted, it's a Bumper Prize, Rs 50,000. The performers learn the art of Time Management. Time Management is not only about doing things in minimum time. It's more about utilising the time available purposefully. Those involved in performing arts will know this better. One gets only about 4 minutes to sing a song and impress the audience. Whereas, for one who makes a speech, though the first few minutes will decide the kind of attention the speaker will get from the audience, time available will depend on the kind of subject on hand and the audience before him. Thus Jawaharlal Nehru completed his first Independence Day speech "Tryst with Destiny" in few minutes, while Krishna Menon spoke for several hours continuously in the United Nations. Many art forms like Kathakali and Mohiniyattam are dubbed "dragging" and efforts are on to reduce their performance duration without affecting the quality and content. Even movies with shorter duration are welcomed by the audience and the media for different reasons though. All these and more are subjects for further research relating to effective Time Management. Before I conclude, word about managing uncertain times. If a team is in place, projects will be be taken forward by the rest of the team when the team leader or a member leaves the scene. But there are projects and families dependent solely on single person for survival. Here the responsibility to ensure continuity and smooth transition makes that person's management crucial. That is another subject altogether, beyond Time Management. ***** *Original version of this article, copied above, was rejected by Times of India Reader's Blog with the following observations : "We regret to inform you that we are unable to publish your post titled 'Time Management' as it did not meet our readers’ blog publishing guidelines." She has picked up many admirers along the way, including late writer U.R. Ananthamurthy, who once called her the “best editor” he had ever known. 2) Power of Translators https://www.thehindu.com/features/magazine/mini-krishnan-on-the-historic-power-of-translators/article8509070.ece/amp/ Today, when translations are shortlisted along with original writings in English for the biggest prize in the literary world — the DSC Award which aims “to raise awareness of South Asian culture around the world” — why are some publishers refusing to grant translators equal status with the authors, making it difficult for them to be remembered or even noticed? We see translators competing with blurbs and endorsements on the back cover, leading readers to say, “Ah! A great book! Translated by whatshisface… don’t remember the name.” Can anyone deny the historic power of translators? Their work has forced massive shifts in the literary canon, cross-fertilised writing and propelled communities emerging from invisibility, besides influencing the vision that language groups have of societies other than their own. D Non-Banking Books By M G Warrier Ants and Honey Bees: Life's Perceptions and Reflections https://www.amazon.in/dp/B07D9SKZXV/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_BNX1FFAXMXTWS99400WY Life, for most of us, happens to be an unresolved puzzle. When life moves on, many stare at it and stand still. The stories in "Ants and Honey Bees" try to develop a commonsense approach which will help us to approach life with a comfortable level of courage and sense of humor. The title of the book happens to be one of the non-fiction essays in the book. The author feels ants have more common sense and willingness to contribute to the community and ensure better management of resources. Other essays are on use and abuse of social media, problems that technology brings with solutions and how optimism helps one in living a happier peaceful life. It is stressful, thankless and, at times, embarrassing. The rotational presidency is a feeble attempt at equalising permanent and non-permanent members in a highly discriminatory structure. The permanent members jealously guard their privileged position and drive the Security Council. The non-permanent member, who becomes the president, according to one of my colleagues who preceded me in the Council, is like a child who is permitted to hold the steering wheel for a while, as his father keeps control over the brake and the gears and also watches the road. The thrill of the child is immeasurable as he thinks that he is actually driving the car. - T P Sreenivasan F Leisure Remembering Charlie Chaplin* Today is the day...when charlie chaplin died....so A Good Day to Recollect his 3 Heart Touching Statements: (1) Nothing is Permanent in this World, not even our Troubles.
