Rekindling old memories :
Yesterday (May 16, 2022) morning, Vengakkad Krishnan Nambudiri telephoned from Karamana, Thiruvananthapuram. I have visited his house many times and enjoyed the hospitality. We met last during 2019. On May 16, 1966 we attended Ravivarman Nambiar's wedding at Guruvayoor and enjoyed a sumptuous Sadya at Bharat Tourist Home Thrissur. Those days, Krishnan, Nambiar and me were working in AG's Office and staying in the same lodge behind Sreekumar Theatre, Thampanoor.
For attending the wedding, Krishnan and I travelled together from Thiruvananthapuram to Guruvayoor and back. During onward journey we stayed for a day in his Illam near Piravam. His mother was very kind and affectionate.
After talking to Nambudiri yesterday, I remembered all these and more. As he and Nambiar read Collage, thought of sharing the memories here. For others, this could become an inspiration to talk to some old friends.
In 1966, he was 30 and me 22. No prize for guessing our present age.

Role of forests in Indian Epics
https://www.jatland.com/home/Flora_of_the_Indian_epics
Flora of the Indian epic period can be a tool to study the antiquity of Indian epics as these do not record time scales of the incident mentioned in these. The flora of an area or of time period, refers to all plant life occurring in an area or time period, especially the naturally occurring or indigenous plant life.

Nothing (is) Serious : Zero's Hero from India!
If what follows is a repeat (it is most likely to be so), kindly bear with me.
While in London, long before he became famous, the great R K Laxman suddenly wished to interview Bertrand Russell. He knew that it was not an easy matter though Russell was in London at that time. He must contact the celebrity's private secretary first to get an appointment. With some hesitation, Laxman dialled the number. On getting the connection he asked : "Is it Lord Russell's residence? "
"Yes" the other end answered.
"May I speak to the Lord's private secretary? "
"You are speaking to the 'Lord' himself."
"Sir, I am R K Laxman, a young journalist from India. I wish to have an interview with your Lordship. If it is not inconvenient, your Lordship may kindly indicate the date and time. "
" No formalities, young man."
The kindly voice said from the other end. "Come straight away if it suits you. Wherefrom you are calling? Do you know where my residence is?"
On getting Laxman's reply, Russell told him in detail how to reach his residence, including the bus numbers.
There was no trace of formality. Russell put him at ease and it was more a friendly talk than a formal interview. Laxman recalled the contrast with the other interviews, especially the one he had with T S Eliot who was most of the time half asleep. During the talk Russell expressed his affection and admiration for Nehru and said that Nehru was mainly responsible for independent India taking the right path, that is, the path of democracy.
When the discussion was over, Russell accompanied Laxman to the gate. On the way he said : "You Indians have discovered nothing." Laxman was taken aback. He started mumbling : "Sir, we had great men of medicine and surgery like Charaka and Sushrutha and great astronomers like Vararuchi, Aryabhatta and Varaahamihira. We had... " Russell, with a loud laugh, interrupted him and said : "Yes, you had great mathematicians too. It is they who had discovered 'nothing,' the concept of zero."

Leisure
Poem* by F R Misquith
IT is said that 'all work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy',
This saying is not a ploy,
But one we should keep in mind and employ,
Then, later on in life, he will be abled himself to deploy.
Let him play with more than just one toy,
After all, a boy, is boy, is a boy!
He's one whom we should not in any way annoy,
And our good relationship with him destroy.

Some are very pleased to live as a tenant for ever.
Those who lived in rented houses for a considerable
time and built their own house or purchased one, know the pleasure of living as a tenant. There was no botheration
of taxes, repairs, and municipal laws. Not that there were
no problems with the landlords but by and large it was a
pleasure because we were free to change the landlord meaning thereby move to another house depending on our
pockets and facilities provided by the landlord. It also gave
us the freedom of accepting transfers with or without promotions and moving to another city. Owning a house
restricted that choice.
Tenant is the very word that brings allergy to some
yet the word brings lot of joy to few others. There are a few who lost the house to rent control act where the
court order fixed the monthly rent to be charged.
Many banks after quartering their employees, flatly
refused to vacate and went to court and brought tears to the landlords.
Human beings long for what is not possessed
by them.
When we lived in different rented houses from 1963 to 69. We longed to build our house. With all the
difficulties such as housing loan, property
tax etc etc, we enjoyed living in our own
small house. That sense of possession,
we can't get anywhere.
Some had shifted residence almost every school year
but always in the vicinity of school or college. As a sequel,
over the years, children had a very large circle of friends.
Some turned celebrities in later years fondly remembered for ever. A sastriji helped my mom from effects of
scorpion poison. He showed a bottle of oil in which dead black & brown Scorpions soaked for eternity. That oil applied over my mother's hand.
Ask the people who live in rented house.
They have a huge list of grievances. In those days, tenancy agreements were just oral. There have been occasions when the
tenant was asked to vacate within 10 or 15 days. They had to find out some
accommodation by hook or crook. There have been heartless house owners who stopped current supply or water supply or had some unauthenticated metre readings for which the tenants had to pay the charges. Sometimes wordy fights turned into serious quarrels and tenants had to face police charges.
Everywhere there are problems. Some are lucky to have good house owners and comfortable stay. For some it is a terrific experience.
Some people have a tendency to always invest in lands and properties. They simply boast of their wise investments and trends of appreciation. See the Real Estate boom and TV advts.
Some people always act smart and safe.
Whether own or rented, peace of mind and moderate comforts are essential.
It is the same way, when you are a tenant of an ideology built by someone else, you enjoy it.
It is sort of a rented
ideology. You have taken it on rent, pay the rent in the
form of raising slogans and flags of that ideology as desired, and move on. You have the choice of shifting to another
ideology depending upon the concessions and promises given.
This ideology may be cultural, social, or political. You have
no contribution to the formation of this opinion. You have no
botheration of maintaining and strengthening this ideology.
You trust the opinion maker and follow it to the brink.
Vast masses of people fall in this category.
In hindsight, I think the soul in our body is also a tenant.
It lives in our body but has no responsibility for repairing
or maintaining it. That responsibility is of the owner of
the body. As a tenant, the soul pays rent regularly in the form of guiding us from time to time. When the
owner of the body fails to preserve its strength, the soul
leaves and enters another body as a tenant. As long as it is in a body, it pays the rent and enjoys the pleasures of tenant life.
