When I retired in Bombay in 1988, he was ED. I know him very well as I used to discuss on various subjects Related to philosophical matters...he used to share with me his Thoughts... He was liked by one and all. He took initiative Allotting bank quarters to Lady officers in Bombay who came on transfer as Getting accommodation at that time was very very difficult... If we could see how much God loves everyone whose life touches ours, We would try harder to love them too... Om Shanti..🙏 V. T. Panchapagesan 2) Vathsala Jayaraman Chennai Very sad to learn that Shri S n Bagai is no more. He was our Instructor in Zonal Training Centre when we joined RBI in 1965. Madras slang is peculiar in Tamil. They used to pronounce 'S' as ' is '. School as ischoolu and, Stalin as Istalin Comments of Shri Bagai:. Bagai was standing in the main hall overlooking the cash counters. One visitor was asking Bagai "Ismail khan Depot enge irukku?"(where is Ismail khan Depot") He could understand some Tamil. He replied that to his knowledge no person named Ismail khan is running a depot in Reserve Bank. One of the Madrasis standing in the queue said " the person is asking for SMALL COIN DEPOT and he is just pronouncing as' Ismail khan Depot'. Bagai used to quote this while talking to various people belonging other regions Vathsala Jayaraman 3) V Sundaresan “I have been knowing/following Bagai from June 10, 1971. From a young man with youth's strength and weaknesses, he evolved into a "Saintly" person. Commonsense came to his rescue in several situations.” May his Soul Rest in Peace Prayers🙏-Warrier" When I joined Chennai office, he was the Personnel Officer in Gr B. When I was in the administration of RBSC Chennai, he was ED looking after the portfolio of Training Division. I had occasions to understand his competence, strength and weakness. I, therefore, consider your above observations as the best and true assessment of late S n Bagai. May his soul rest in peace. Sundaresan V 4) T K E Das* Mumbai Shri Sn Bagai was embodiment of true Character and Magnanimity. His personality was based on Kindness and Tender love for other Human Beings. His Actions were based on Magnanimity and sympathy. Above all he was an admirable soul. From the time he came to Mumbai in Central Office, he was known to me as a Boss and as a Friend. Our relations remained cordial all through and was cherished by me all these years. The news of his death was very shocking to me. All I can do is pray to the God to keep his soul in eternal peace and to give courage to the family to bear this great loss. T.K.E.Das *Via Group mail 5) A P Ramadurai Cheñnai Presence of mind There was recently in COLLAGE an article on this subject. A candidate very well prepared for the interview, unfortunately trips and falls prostrate. He does not lose his presence of mind but smartly gets up, smiles and salutes the interview team and says “I have fallen in good company” No need to say he is selected without any questions. Reshmy's wonderful thoughts bring to my mind the gist of the poem 'Lost Jewels' I read in 1960s. I don't remember the verses. But the contents had a lot of impact on me and It is still fresh in my memory. It is a long poem running to three pages. There was a great philosopher in Britain. He was a veteran giving spiritual discourses and he was always welcome. He used to be out of hometown months together and spend time with his wife and children for just a week. During the whole week he never enquired about the welfare of wife and kids and the philosopher spent time in trumpeting about the honours and encomia showered on him.' Months rolled on. During a particular period the philosopher never returned for two years. When he returned once again there was self glorification. This time the wife started. 'Dear, I want to tell you an important thing. Years ago, a sadhu came to this house and handed over two precious jewels to me. He asked me to keep the jewels in safe custody, polish the jewels then and there and keep them shining. And I was asked to return the jewels whenever he asked for them. I too had great care and consideration and the jewels started shining. Four months back the sadhu came and asked me to hand over the jewels. By the time I had a feeling that the jewels belonged to me. I parted with both the jewels with great sorrow. After all is it not our duty to return to the owner? The philosopher thought about the entire episode. Suddenly it struck him and now only he enquired about the two children. The wife without showing any emotions replied 'O, you are asking about those two jewels!' and kept quiet. After a day he learnt from neighbours how the lady brought with care and love and they shone like brilliant gems in the school. Unfortunately the children succumbed to the epidemic fever, The poem ended with the question 'Who is the real philosopher? The man or wife?: The poem was found in a collection 'Poems Anonymous'. The book contained nearly 400 poems, a wonderful treasure my father possessed (unfortunately the book was lost from our native home). Many of the poems were as revealing as that of Tennyson or Wordsworth or Keats. Though we may not know the name of the poet and his nationality, the contents speak a lot and bring a true picture of the poet's mind. After all, that is the real appreciation of poetry. That is why the story lingers even today. Vathsala Jayaraman 2) G Mohandas Chennai Dear Jayakumar, I read your poem with great interest! Nobody can have any peace or rest This corona pandemic has done the worst! It is a man made disaster but God will do his best. Love G.Mohandas (Dear Mohandas Sir, Thanks for your poetic response. Covid may be god's way of reminding people that it is time to pause and reflect the truth that man is not in contol of everything but God is... The situation all-around is out of human control. God may do only what best he can do, in his role, While we continue to count the daily death toll. Time has come to clutch his feet within our fold. With love and regards R Jayakumar ) E Travelogue 1) Preserving Heritage Santosh George Kulangara is a Travelogue Specialist.
