Why we may need more eccentrics - The Hindu

Wanted,
more eccentrics!
This refers to the essay ‘Why
we may need more eccentrics’ (The Hindu, Open page, January 5) by Mohan Das. The piece brings
back nostalgic memories of essays by old timers like Bertrand Russel, who
leisurely wrote long essays on subjects which were, even during their time,
considered trivial by several readers, but were accepted and enjoyed by many.
There will be hardly a
single soul among the present day ‘senior citizens’ in India, who would not
have come across at least some of the several species of ‘eccentrics’ mentioned
in the article. Exploitation of eccentrics in various situations was an
everyday sight in villages during the last century. 21st Century has
seen some of the eccentrics prospering, but their number is small. The society,
instead of exploiting their talent, often exploited eccentrics’ vulnerability.
On a serious note, those
who have listened to PM’s Mann Ki Baat on
December 27 would remember Modi’s loud thought about describing ‘differently
abled’ fellow-humans as ‘Divyaang’.
With proper help and support, eccentrics will become part of a more productive
workforce than those who are concealing their eccentricity in various ways.
