WEEKEND LIGHTER

“THE KINGDOM OF GOD IS WITHIN”: JESUS

I liked the interpretation of the above quote from Jesus by Swami Kriyananda (Speaking Tree, Economic Times, November 4, 2015). He says, heaven itself will be disappointment to restless, worldly people. Taking his averment further Swami argues, ‘If a person has no true joy in his heart, he will not find true joy outside, though he be in heaven itself and in the company of angels.’ And concludes that ‘Heaven must be experienced right here, right now, within ourselves, if we are to experience it ever’. Swami concludes the short piece with the following observation:

“If you would change the world for the better, first of all, be better yourself. You are the greatest responsibility the universe has placed in your hands”

AFTER READING THIS, I WENT BACK TO BHAGAVADGITA AND FOUND THE FOLLOWING STANZA:

“Uddharedaatmanaatmaanam Naatmaanamavasadayet
Aaatmaiva Hyaatmano Bandhuraatmaiva Ripuraatmanah”
(Bhagavadgita, 6.5)
(One should lift oneself by one’s own efforts and should not degrade oneself; for one’s own self is one’s friend, and one’s own self is one’s enemy.)
