The song from the 1991 film Saajan selected for today's Collage by Mr Ramesh Warrier, 'Mera Dil be Kithna Pagal Hai' sung by Kumar Shanu and Alka Yagnik was an award winning song. The story of the film is a triangular puzzle for two boys and one girl, unable to decide who loved whom. Every moment for them was an unsolved question, to be or not to be, or rather to love or not to love. The final message is that one must sacrifice love for the sake of friendship. The three main actors are Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit and Salman Khan. This particular song was filmed on Sanjay and Madhuri. It is a sort of dreaming song for the hero as he imagines things happening with his lover through this song. As the video of the song is only with photo slides and not real scenes I could not enjoy the acting part. This is the only song in the film given to Kumar Shanu and he got the Best Singer award. Another half a dozen songs are by SPB all of them cornered by Salman for his glory. In the song Tujse milne ki tamanna hai, SPB and Salman look born for each other in the matching of the voice. Now to say something about why I am attracted to the film Saajan, there is an anecdote. In 1982 or 83 once we were returning by Madras Mail after an official tour to Madras office seated in an AC 2 tier compartment. Sitting on the aisle side birth was a young man traveling with some cine equipments. During our chat he disclosed that he was an assistant cameraman working with a Bollywood film company and was returning from a film shoot in Tamil Nadu. He introduced himself as Lawrence D'Souza. When posters appeared in Bombay streets before the release of this film his name appeared prominently as the director of this film. The film was a grand success. I remember his face well. We must have wished him good success in his career before parting. After Saajan he directed more than a dozen Hindi films and also worked as a successful cinematographer. It pleases the heart to see that someone known to us climbed the ladder in life. On the other side, the music composing duos Nadeem and Shravan who composed all the hit songs of Saajan had a bad ending when Nadeem became a fugitive like Mallya in the UK, not for a financial embezzlement but for a criminal case. For some people it is a question, to live or not to live in their country!
