Akash,
sky is the limit!
sky is the limit!
This refers to the report
“Akash, a success story of ‘Make in India’” (Business Line, December 18). In
recent past, India’s public sector undertakings quietly accept all the blame
for not being able to compete with their private sector counterparts in India
and elsewhere. Post-independence, the political leadership had the vision to
foresee the significant role public sector can play in core sectors including space
research, oil exploration and defence production.

Somewhere during late
1970’s, the aggressive marketing capabilities the developed world acquired and applied
to their advantage in developing nations like India resulted in the neglect of
efficient public sector organisations in this country. The growth and sometimes
survival of institutions like UTI in the financial sector, establishments like
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited, HMT and even BEL was allowed to be dwarfed by
pampering private sector establishment in the name of liberalisation and
competition.

It is refreshingly
soothing to find that at least some production units of BEL, HAL, ISRO etc are
able to get back to a healthy growth trajectory, thanks to the focus on ‘Make
in India’. Let us congratulate the leadership of BEL for achieving indigenisation
of 90 per cent in missile air defence system. 80 per cent share of indigenously
developed technologies in sales turnover in this sector is no mean achievement.
