I don't think, researchers have spent adequate time and resources to understand the symbolism in Indian Mythology.
See the roles played by Hanuman. Think of his mother. His powers. His devotion to Rama. Perhaps other than Krishna (Govardhan story), Hanuman is the only person to carry a mountain in one hand. Krishna had at least his feet on the ground. Hanuman had to fly a long distance at a time like the one which we are passing through (all flights cancelled). He dropped portions of the mountain he was carrying in the present Kannur district of Kerala (those pieces are now known as Ezhimala or Seven Hills).
